THE BIRTHDAY LIST BRITISH RECIPIENTS SEVERAL NEW BARONS (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, June 7. The Birthday honours include the following:— The Duke of Kent has been promoted to the ranks of rear-admiral, major-general, and air vice-marshal. Max Beerbohm has become a knight bachelor. Edward Wilshaw, chairman of directors of Cables and Wireless, Ltd., receives a K.C.M.G. Philip Edward Haldin, Thomas Drummond Shiels, and Francis Carnegie (chief superintendent of ordnance factories) become knights bachelor. The new barons included in the list are:—Sir Arthur de Capell Brooke, Sir Herbert Cayzer, Captain Herbert Dixon (their elevation to the peerage will necessitate by-elec-tions in Portsmouth and South and East Belfast respectively), Sir Henry Lyons, and Sir Frederick Marquis. The new Commissioner for Works (Mr Herwald Ramsbotham), whose appointment to succeed the late Sir Philip Sassoon was announced last night, becomes a Privy Councillor, as does the Scottish Conservative Whip in the House of Commons (Mr James Stuart). Professor Owen Richardson, whose work on the emission of electrons from heated filaments has been a

valuable contribution to the progress of radio and television, is knighted. Dr Drummond Shiels, Undersecretary for India and later for the Colonies in Mr Ramsay MacDonald’s second Labour Administration, also becomes a knight. There are two new companions of honour—Dr G. P. Gooch, the historian, and Mr J. J. Mallon, one of the governors of the 8.8. C. Seven knighthoods are conferred in the dominions, 16 in India and Burma, and 4 in the Colonial Empire. Orders of Chivalry Coming to the orders of chivalry, it is interesting to note, in view of their Majesties’ arrival in the United States, that Sir Ronald Lindsay receives the Order of the Knight Grand Cross of the Bath. Another G.C.B. in the civil division is Sir Findlater Stewart, Permanent Under-secretary at the India Office. C.B.E’s by appointment or promotion, include: Mr A. H. King (British Consul at Lisbon) and Mr O. F. N. Thavenot (judicial adviser to the Siamese Ministry of Justice). Mr F. R. Gibb (British Consul at Addis Ababa) becomes a C.B.E, and Mr Harold Levison (British Viceconsul at Penang) an M.B.E. A number of honours are also conferred in connection with A.R.P. work and for services to the movement for physical fitness. Appointments and promotions in the Order of St. Michael and St. George include Sir Edward Harding, Permanent Under-Secretary at the Dominions Office, who becomes G.C.M.G., Sir Humphrey Walsyn, Governor of Newfoundland, who is made a knight commander. Major E. N. Crankshaw, who Is well known to many distinguished foreign visitors to Britain in the capacity of secretary to the Government’s Hospitality Fund, is promoted K.C.M.G. Among diplomatic and consular appointments or promotions in this order are those of Sir Robert Hodgson, who, for services while British Agent at Burgos, becomes a K.C.M.G.; Mr Seymour, British Minister at Teheran, another K.C.M.G.; and Colonel Mackirith, Consul at Damascus, and E. H. Shepherd, Consul-general at Danzig, who both are appointed commanders.

In the Order of the British Empire Bernard Docher, chairman of Westminster Hospital, who has taken an active part in connection with the new hospital buildings, is appointed a knight commander. Seton Gordttor, the author of many books on nature subjects, becomes a C.B.E. Otto Moritz Schieff, who is chairman of the Jewish Aid Committee and has done valuable work among refugees, is promoted C.B.E. A K.B.E. is conferred on Henry Fitzmaurice, British Consul-general at Batavia, and also on James Gillan, Secretary to the Sudan Government. RECIPIENT OF BARONETCY POVERTY TO AFFLUENCE LONDON, June 8. (Received June 9, at 0.15 a.m.) On the eve of last night’s announcement of a baronetcy for Mr Harry Oakes, a one-time penniless gold prospector, it was revealed that he had given £ 10,000 to St. George’s Hospital. He had already given the hospital £BO,OOO. He is one of the richest men in the world, and his income is estimated at more than £1,000,000 a year from Canadian mines.
