NEW AMERICAN CONTRACTS The United States Maritime Commission have awarded contracts for the construction of a further 10 vessels, making a total of 63 vessels ordered. The Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Va.. arc to build six steamers at a cost of. 2,890,000 dollars each, and the Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Chester, Pa., four motorships for 3.167.100 dollars each. The ships, of flic standard " C 3 " type, will be of 11,926 tons dw., having a length of 492 ft, a beam of 69ft Bin. and a depth of 42ft 6ln. Thu designed speed is 16i knots, and there will be accommodation for 68 to 100 passengers. In announcing the orders, ttic Maritime Commission state that they have allocated the 10 new ships to tlie Government-controlled American Presidents Line, the six steamers being intended for the San Francisco round-the-world route, and the four motor-ships for the former SeattleOrient service, which Is to be resumed.
