ORKNEY AND SHETLAND SOCIETY

.... MONTHLY SOCIAL The monthly social of the Orkney and Shetland Society was held on Saturday evening, there being a large a.tendance of members and their friends. The president (Mr G. R. Bowrick), in a short address referred to the pleasure it gave him to see so many present. He also mentioned the new badge of the society, which was on sale tha t night for the first time The badge consisted of a bronze Viking ship in the centre of a blue metal disc with the words Orkney and Shetland Society. Later in the evening, aflei thanking the different performers who helped so much to make the socials a success, he referred to the death of Mrs Henry, a very old colonist who had arrived here in 1868 and who had been the oldest member of the society, asking all present to stand a minute in silence as a mark of respect The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with the following items: —Songs. Mr W Mac Lean. Mr Mitchell; bagpipe selections. Master James Cromarty; and a talk by Mr Mahan. The winners of the “Movie Waltz " were Mr Mahan and Mrs King The accompanist was Mrs Neil Johnston, and Mr William Sabiston acted as M.C. for the evemne.
