Mrs W. Roberts presided over a wellattended meeting of the Janefiold Institute, held on May 31. Three new members were nominated. The motto was “All worldly joys go less to the one joy of doing kindnesses.” An exhibition of articles for the Dunedin Winter Show bay was on view. The hostesses were Mesdames Gourly Kenrick and Miss Kirkwood.

Mrs Walker presided over the monthly meeting of the Waitahuna Institute, at which the roll call was “ Subscriptions, please.” A golden thread talk on “ Famous Women ” was given by Mrs Labes, and Miss M. Ponder demonstrated on hand weaving displaying a beautiful checked scarf woven by this method. Miss M. Cameron reported on the meeting of the Mid-Otago Federation. Enjoyable items were rendered by Miss H. McCaw (pianoforte solo) and Miss M. Ponder (recitations). The competitions resulted as follows:—Best shopping bag, materials to cost not more than 2s 6d (senior)—Mrs Labes 1, Miss Stewart 2; junior—Miss M. Cameron 1; best bloom—Miss Smith 1, Mrs Labes and

Miss M. Cameron (equal) 2. A wordbuilding competition was won by Miss H. McCaw.

The Macandrew Bay Institute held its meeting on Thursday last, Mrs Vickers presiding. The roll call was “Funniest thing I have ever seen.” The evening being "members’ night” games were played, the results being as follows—Lucky hand shake—Mrs Lane; spinning plate—Mrs Jarvis: musical hats—Mrs Pocklington. The competitions resulted;—Name Mrs JRiddell; best bloom —Mrs Butler 1, Mrs Smallman 2. The institute was fortunate in gaining first prize for a bay at the Winter Show. The hostesses were Mesdames Binkley, Timms, Bakers. Johnson. Maule, Spence and Airey. V # ¥

The June meeting of the Sutton Institute was held on Saturday last at the home of Mrs J. McHardy. when the senior vice-president, Mrs R. M. Johnstone, was in the chair. One new member was enrolled. The motto was “‘ I can’t,’ is the tool that digs the grave for many a fine talent.” The roll call was “ Which has more influence on character—books or companions; arid why?” The competition—" Six daintiest sandwiches—resulted: Mrs Pedofsky 1, Miss McHardy 2, Mrs McHardy 3. An appeal for clothing to be sent to the Samaritan Office, Salvation Army, Dunedin, was well responded to. Mrs Garrett, as delegate, reported on the annual meeting of the MidOtago Federation, r A number of enjoyable impromptu items were given. The hostesses were Mrs McHardy and Misses Jean and Gwenda McHardy.

An interesting letter was received from Miss Brenda Bell, who is on tour with the institute party in Europe. It was decided to arrange a voluntary organisers’ school as soon as possible.
