QUEENSTOWN Wakattpu Golf Championships Beautiful weather prevailed for the King’s Birthday matches, which were played at the Frankton golf course. Visitors from the Arrowtown and Lumsden Clubs were present. The links were in splendid condition, ahs about 45 players made the most of tha holiday. Trophies were presented by Mr T. Tomkies (president). The ladies’ championship was won by Mrs L. Jamieson with a score of 98, the runner-up being Mrs Hartley Smith with 100. The hidden score match, which was run conctirrently with the ladies’ championship, was won by Mrs G. Herbert. A Medal Match played over nine holes was won by Miss Henderson with a net card of 31, and Miss McLachlan was second with 33. The winner of the men’s senior championship was Mr A. Earl (Lumsden), 157, and the runner-up was Mr Hartley Smith (Queenstown), 167. In the men’s junior championship Mr Ogilvy (Lumsden) 177, who drew with Mr C. H. McKay (Queenstown), won on the count-back of the last three holes. The men’s Medal was won by Mr S. Wilkinson, who returned a net card of 62, followed by Mr N. Hall with a card of 65. Mr and Mrs Hartley Smith returned the best card for combined foursome for the week, winning the golf balls. The Helper Badge was won by Mr* Hartley Smith. Rugby Football With the first match of the second round in the Maniototo Rugby Football Sub-union competition, played last Saturday, when fine weather conditions prevailed, the lead in competition points was still held by Southern and Ranfurly. The match played on the Ranfurly ground between Ranfurly and Ida Valley was won by the former team by 14 points to nil. The match on a whole was ragged, the Ranfurly backs only occasionally producing the form shown in their previous games. The following were the results:—Southern 25. Naseby nil; Ranfurly 14, Ida Valley nil; Becks 13, Middlemarch 11. The draw for Saturday is as follows:—Southern v. Ranfurly, Becks v. Naseby. Middlemarch v. On Monday the Ranfurly Women's Hockey Club held .a successful tournament, which attracted entries from 81 teams. The tournament was well organised, and the way the games were begun, with the least possible delay, reflected credit bn the committee. Defence Rifle Shooting On Saturday the Gimmerburn Defence Rifle Club fired the first competition shoot for the Ladies’ Rose Bowl.
