FREEZING WORKS
THE-SEASON IN SOUTHLAND
EXTENSION FOR A WEEK (Special to VDaily Times) INVERCARGILL,. June f* The closing date of the Southland freezing works, which were to have completed killings for the season tomorrow, has been extended till next week, the number of stock coming in making this decision necessary. A suggestion that the works should this year agree ampng themselves as to which one should remain open until the end of July or-close at a stated time and reopen for a period at the end of this month was approved at last week’s annual provincial conference of the Farmers’ Union. It was agreed that the freezing companies should be - approached with the request. Announcing an extension of the closing date sa that all stock could-be dealt with, the general manager of the Southland Frozen Meat Company, Ltd. (Mr A. Derbie) stated that the custom in the past ha<J been for the works to meet the requirements of the producers by operating'as long as reasonable supplies were offering, but the Farmers’, Union’s suggestion - ..to close now ~apd reopen for a week in July was unreasonable and quiteout of the question. Apart from the fact that the quantities would pot warrant such a course the difficulty of re-en-gaging labour was by no means the least serious objection. The. men would by that time nave, taken up other work and would not, therefore, be available. Mr Derbie said that killing, ..at the Makarewa and Mataura works would continue to the end Of- the present week and' for three days' Of next- week at Mataura. Should'it be'found necessary to kill at Makarewa next week 1 Arrangements would. Ije made , accordingly. In the meantime, farmers:should make their requirements known to the. drafters and , buyers -so,, that .definite space bookings might be. made.
