YOUTH LABOUR
WORK IN FACTORIES DEMAND EXCEEDS SUPPLY (Peb United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 6. "If we were able to supply the youth labour demand in Wellington we would be very happy," said the secretary of the Government Youth Centre in Wellington (Mr S. H. Petersen) to-day, commenting on the shortage of youths. There was an insistent demand, particularly for boys for factories, Mr Petersen said. In the past boys had not looked to factories as providing an avenue for a permanent career Circumstances were different to-day, and there was every likelihood of plenty of permanent skilled iobs being available Mr Petersen said that in the expansion of secondary industries in New Zealand some of the key positions were at present held by imported tradesmen. These positions must in time become available to local workers once they were trained to the requirements Employment for youths in factories offered favourable prospects and better scope, and it was probable that the prejudice against this class of work would be broken down in time.
