WANAKA The Weather Although bright sunshine prevailed most of the week, it was very cold In th« shade after severe frosts at night. The snow line is much lower, and Mount Roy has had its first coating this year. It is noticeably colder for the month of June than it has been for some years. Rugby Football The Wanaka Rugby Football Club played the Tarras Club, at Tarras. last Saturday. The weather was ideal fo* football, and an interesting game resulted in a win for Tarras by 9 points to nil. For the Tarras team, Kitto kicked a penalty goal, Jolly another, and Cowie scored a try. Mount Burke Fanners' Union A meeting of the Farmers' Union was held last week, when there was a good attendance. Mr W. Kane presided, and an interesting address on the Stock Act was given by Mr Mills, the resident stock inspector at Wanaka. CROMWELL Rugby Football The A Grade Rugby football match Tarras v. Matakanui. which had been postponed from earlier in the season, was played on Monday and resulted in a win for Tarras by 11 points to 9. The Alexandra-Cromwell match, which was to have been played on Saturday, was postponed until later in the season. The Weather As indicative of the mild conditions so far experienced this winter is the fact that there is still in many parts of the district remarkably good growth. Although a few fairly hard frosts have occurred, the days have been fine and mild, with a good deal of warmth in the sun. To date the present season is probably one of the mildest experienced for some years. LAWRENCE Rugby Football The South Tuapeka v. Zingafi-Rich-mond match was played at Simpson Park, Lawrence, on Monday, in the annual match for the Gabriel's Gully Cup. The weather was fine, and the spectators were thrilled with a fast, open exhibition of football. Winning the toss, South Tuapeka played with the sun at their backs in the first spell, and were immediately on the attack. In the first 10 minutes Zingari had to force down on three occasions, and then Percy made a brilliant run from half-way to be collared by, Mason a few yards short of the line. However, Turnbull followed up fast, and securing possession, went over for a try wide out. McGown's kick failed.— South Tuapeka 3, Zingari-Richmond nil. Good passing by Trainor, Rennie and Mehalski put the Colours on attack, and then Tyrie nearly forced his way over close to the posts. A long kick by Cotton transferred play to midfield, where McGown and Stuart led a South Tuapeka forward rush to the Zingari line. Play was even for the rest of the half,'which ended with the scores: South Tuapeka 3, ZingariRichmond nil. Play in the second half settled in the Zingari twenty-five, Cotton being prominent with good play for the Greens. Zingari were opening up the game at every opportunity, and both forwards and backs were throwing the ball about in good style, but the rushes were not gaining much ground owing to the deadly tackling of the country team. Miller, the South Tuapeka full-back, made a solo dash of 70 yards before being collared near the Zingari line, where Stuart picked up to dive over in a handy position. McGown converted—South Tuapeka 8, Zingari-Richmond nil. Shortly afterwards Sheppard eluded an opponent and steadied himself to pot a great field goal from 30 yards out—South Tuapeka 12, Zingari-Richmond nil. At this stage the Greens were definitely on top, the Colours defending strenuously. Cotton, first five-eighth for South Tuapeka, was injured, and went to fullback, Miller coming up. Percy set the South Tuapeka backs in motion, and Miller cut through for a try wide out. -The kick failed.—South Tuapeka 15, Zingari-Richmond nil. With five minutes to go the Zingari team made a great effort to reduce the leeway and V. Short scored in the corner. The kick was unsuccessful. Right on time Samson scored Zingari's second try near the posts, and A. Mason converted. Time was called with the scores: South Tuapeka 15. ZingariRichmond 8. Mr J. R. Caradus was referee. As a curtain-raiser the Tuapeka Mouth juniors played a Combined junior team, the game resulting in a win for the Combined team by 14 points to 5. For the winners, W. Winchester, T. Walker. D. Jones and W May scored tries, one of which was converted by N. Elliott. For Tuapeka Mouth, R. Jones scored and converted a try. Mr H. Hollands was referee. Women's Hockey

In the South Otago Women's Hockey Association's competition on Saturday, Lawrence secured its first win of the season by beating Milton B.

Tuapeka Hospital During May. 15 patients were admitted to the Tuapeka Hospital, while there were 16 discharges.

OMAKAU Kagby Football The Matakanui B team' was defeated by Alexandra on Saturday by 17 points to nil. No matches were played at Omakau, the A team having a bye. On Monday, the A Grade match Matakanui v. Tarras. was played at Omakau. Weather conditions were ideal, and the ground was in good order, and the match, which was also a challenge match for the White Horse Cup. was witnessed by a large crowd of spectators. In the first spell the game was confined mostly to the forwards. Tarras having the better of this spell. Tries were scored for Tarras by M. Hamilton and W. Jolly, one try being converted by Kitto. M. Hamilton kicked a penalty goal, the score at half time beiag: Tarras 11, Matakanui nil. In the second spell Matakanui showed a decided improvement, and some good play was witnessed. Burke. Alexander, and Flannery scored for Matakanui. none of the tries being converted, and the game ended in favour of Tarras by 11 points to 9. For Tarras, Kitto and .M. Hamilton were Outstanding in the backs, and in the forwards D. Hamilton and Jolly were prominent. Gillies and Brown played well in the Matakanui backs, and in

At the conclusion of the game the cup was handed to the captain of the visiting team, which was congratulated on it* fine display of football. In the course.of the B Grade match, Alexandra v. Matakanui, at Alexandra on Saturday, C. M. Lester, centre for Matakanui, sustained a fractured collarbone. Fixtures for next Saturday are as follows:—A Grade: Matakanui v. Wanaka, at Omakau; Alexandra v. Tarras, at Alexandra; Cromwell, a bye. In the B Grade the Matakanui team nas a bye. Personal Miss N. A. Wragge, daughter of Mr and Mrs S. Wragge, Lauder, has left to take up nursing duties at the Balclutha Hospital. Prior to her departure Miss Wragge was entertained at a function at the Omrkau Private Hotel and presented with a travelling rug. Constable A. H. Ellens, of Ophir, is on his annual holiday, and is being relieved by Constable A. Drake, of Dunedin.-

Mr and Mrs A. S. McMillan. Dunedin, are spending a holiday with Mrs McMillan's parents. Mr and Mrs A. C. Scoular, Matakanui Station. A social evening was held recently at the residence of Mr J. McKnight, Ophir, when the members of the Ophir-Omakau Combined Bible Classes bade farewell to the Rev. K. T. F. Larsen, who is shortly leaving to take up the Mornington charge. On behalf of the members, Miss I. Whyte made suitable presentations to Mr and Mrs Larsen, and expressesd regret at their departure. Youth Institute Under the auspices of the Presbyterv of Central Otaeo, a Youth Institute was held at Ophir on the King's Birthday, when representatives were; present from the various Central Otago parishes. Addresses were delivered by Miss Iris Wilson, of the church youth office, and Miss B. Kerr. Discussion groups were led by the Revs R. W. Murray (Waipiata) and D. K. Boyd (Queenstown). During the meeting various problems affecting the Sunday school and Bible class were discussed. CLYDE Golf The Dunstan Golf Club was fortunate in having two good days for its annual tournament, which was held on Saturday and Monday. The tournament was well patronised by the surrounding clubs, although the Omakau,Club was. absent on Monday. Play on Saturday was confined to the afternoon, when four-ball bogey matches were played for ladies' and men's medal rounds. Quail Season Between local and visiting shooters over the week-end the sound of guns has been heard from everv gully m the vicinity. No big bags have been reported. The birds fere in good condition, as also are chukor, the' latter being fairly plentiful. Whiter Show Local exhibitors have put up a good' showing at the Otago, A. and P.; Winter. Show again this year, Mr J.;R, Laing being well to the fore in the, apple section, while Mr J. McArthur was again in evidence in the wool class. . The Weather The weather for the week-end ana holiday was very mild and enjoyable. Nine points' of rain fell early on Monday morning. LAUDER Gun Club The opening shoot of the Lauder Gun Club was held on Friday, there being a good attendance of shooters. In the Black and White Whisky Cup Match of 12 birds, A. Mcintosh shot the only possible. In a 12-bird novice shoot for the Dewar Cup, E. Leith and J. Stuart tied with nine breaks each. In the shoot-off E. Leith won. The best scores were as follows:—Black and White Whisky Cup: A.' Mcintosh. 18yds, 12 breaks; S. Hoskin, 13yds, 11 breaks; W. Stuart, 11yds, 11 breaks; J. Stuart, 11yds, 9 breaks; W.
