TABLE TENNIS

By Chop

Last week’s games advanced the competition another stage, and below is given the position of the teams as they are at present. Although fairly early in the season, the enthusiasm shown in all grades is remarkable. This should augur well for the championship tourney to be held later. A GRADE COMMENTS

Y.M.C.A. 23 points beat St. Patrick’s 11. Table tennis of high class was shown in this game. Todd took two games from Fogarty, and, although they were closely contested, 23 —21. 23—21, it was quite a meritorious performance on the part of the former B Grade player. Chisholm's 25 beat Mornington 9. S. Archer and F. Foster again contributed their eights. Sagar and Hutchison won five and four games respectively, and both arc improving with every match. Mornington’s team shared the honours fairly evenly, but this team is not up to the standard it has set in the past. _Dunedin 19 points defeated Friends 15. This match, which was played at the Dunedin Club rooms provided plenty of interest, and the improved play of Howe with six games to his credit, was partly instrumental in turning the tide in Dunedin’s favour Knowles did well for Friends, and M Friend will soon be coming into his own. It is a big handicap at the start for a player to have to change his style, but Morris is adapting himself ‘•reditably, B GRADE The most interesting match in the B Grade was that between National Bank and Hillside I, the former being the winners by 19 points to 13. Ferguson was a prominent player for National Bank, although new to the game. G. J. Robertson collected the roost games for the bank side, and Robbie” is showing his cricket tenacity in this game. Johnson and the veteran Bish performed creditably for Hillside, but lacked support. Kensington. 30 points, registered an overwhelming victory against Zenith II 2, J. Craig (Kensington)netted his fourth consecutive total of eight games. The games in this match were close, and Zenith was unlucky not to have had a larger score Kensinatnti 0 points beat Hillside II 12. M, Paine, of the winning side, was definitely on his "ame, and won every game he played, For the railway club J. Mills contributed four, but m s team mates were apparently out of form. C GRADE Kensington I 22 points beat Christie's 10. Kensington’s team had been strengthened by the inclusion of H, Coombs. J. Roy, although a newcomer to the game, was well to the fore with eight games. Kensington II 17 points beat Hill“yS. Kensington had a close call with Hillside I in an evenly contested match. The absence of Churchill is noticed in the Kensington team. A.A.O, I 25 points beat A.A.O. II 7, Haggitt went for the “doctor” from the start and had the “ seconds ” comP le i eI X. i rattled - win ning eight games. L. Pettit, of A.A.O. 11, by his performance Is due for a step up the ladder. D GRADE Kensington’s defeat of Roslyn Methodist by 20 games to 12 gave the club its fifth win. McKay was the Hill team’s stumbling block and collected eight games, while Maritt was the outstanding player for the losers. GENERAL Captains of teams are failing to furnish their reports and are earnestly requested to lodge these with the secretary each week.
