RACING AND TROTTING

SOUTH CANTERBURY MEETING THE FIELDS FOR TO-DAY \ - ■ ■— PASSAFORM AND FOXLOVE FACULTIES IN STEEPLECHASE

The Timaru Meeting The South Canterbury Jockey Club will open its winter meeting to-day and with a good card comprised of flat-racing, hurdle racing, cross-country events and light-harness racing the meeting should draw a large attendance. The following may be amongst those fancied for their engagements:— Levels Hurdles.--Travenna. Pink Robe, Survey. Claremont Hack Handicap—Phenomenal, Astral Flash. Lady Sincere or Triple Cone. , , Opihi Trot— Kansas City. Maries Pride, Erin’s Lad. Elloughton Handicap. Passaform. Foxlove. Petersham or Night Hawk. Craignore Steeplechase. Faculties. Wexford Bridge, Pandme. Kingsdown Hack Handicap.—Wardress, Disband. Elegy or Marry Simon. Beaconsfleld Trot. Siege Gun. Black Art, Labour Day. Seadown Handicap. Nightcalm, Flagman. The card is as follows: ft—

Astral Flash Last season Astral Flash ran third to Astaire and Lochie River at Gore. In her next start she won at Invercargill with 7.7 in Imin 14 2-ssec. Silver Streak

Silver Streak, one of the best left by Paper Money, is booked to reappear at Timaru. He was foaled in 1929.

Warner 'Wagner, who is top-weight in the Kingsdown Hack Handicap, started six times in the early part of the season without gaining a place. He finished up last season by winning at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting with 9.8 in heavy going. He stays fairly well. A Notable Visitor The well-known owner and trainer Mr J. T. Jamieson, accompanied by Mrs Jamieson, is on a visit to Dunedin. Mr Jamieson has been for some years one of the most successful trainers in Australia. A Sharp Turn

At the Timaru Cup meeting horses racing over a mile and a-quarter struck trouble when making the sharp turn out of the straight. A good position at this stage of a race over the distance may make all the difference between winning and losing. A horse drawing a bit wide may be carried into a hopeless position at the first turn by being compelled to give away a lot of ground to others more favourably placed. Nightdress

When Nightdress was showing winning form in the early part of the season he shaped like a horse likely to win a good race. He won three on end and at the Wellington spring meeting won with 8.11 in 2min 9sec on a slow track. He has won a couple of times sinoe then, but some of his form, has been rather disappointing. Nightdress has only to reproduce his best form to win at Timaru.
