TEMUKA | Presentation to Labour Secretary Mr J. H. Forrester, who has been secretary of the Temuka branch of the Labour Party since its inception, was . the guest of honour at a social held in the Labour Hall, Temuka, at which I the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan) presided, i Among those present were Mr Clyde i Carr, M.P., and Messrs J. A. Kearton | and D. Barnes, who contested the Te--1 muka and Waitaki seats at the last elec- ■ lion. All spoke in warm terms of the work accomplished by Mr Forrester, who recently relinquished the post of ’ secretary on account of his being transferred to Timaru. The presentation, which was made by the Mayor on behalf of the subscribers, consisted of an ornamental clock and a well-filled wallet. Mr Forrester made a suitable acknowledgment. Revival of Hockey At an enthusiastic meeting of hockey players, held at Temuka on Tuesday evening, both men’s and women’s clubs were formed. The Mayor (Mr A. W Buzan) was elected patron of the former. and the Mayoress patroness for the latter. Visit of Mr J. Thorn i During the early part of this week Mr James Thorn, Labour M.P. for Thames, visited Temuka and gave an address to members of the Temuka branch of the Labour Party. El--1 liott. ] EASTERN SOUTHLAND I Obituary i The death of Mrs Catherine Baldwin occurred at her residence in Gore last week. Arriving at the small village of Longford, as Gore was known in 1872, Mrs Baldwin was one of the first women to reside within the boundaries of the town, and for the last 67 years she had been a continuous resident. Mrs Baldwin was born at Inverness, Scotland, 87 years ago. She was a daughter of Dr John Rose, and she was educated at Edinburgh ColI lege. When 19 years of age she sailed : for New Zealand in the Edward P. Bouvery. About 12 months after her arrival in New Zealand she married Mr David Baldwin, of Invercargill, and she and her husband moved to Gore ; in 1872. Mrs Baldwin’s first home was i built on the site where the Gore Town ! Hall now stands, and it is believed that she was the first resident to i bring factory-made furniture into the ! town. During the early days, of the 1 township she took a prominent part i in the welfare of the community, be- | ing at that time one of the few peri sons who possessed a knowledge of 1 nursing. For many years she was a i prominent member of the Gore and District Early Settlers’ Association. Mrs Baldwin was predeceased by her hus- : band about 30 years ago, and she is i survived by one son—Mr David BaldI win (Auckland) —and four daughters, i Mrs Dean (Perth, Australia). Mrs Ali ]en (Invercargill) and Misses Kate and I Ella Baldwin (Gore). There are also ! 17 grandchildren and four great grandj children. TAPANUI R.S.A. The annual meeting of the West Otago sub-branch, Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association, was held at Kelso, when there was a moderate attendance. Mr A. G. Dumbleton presided. The chairman extended a welcome to the Gore contingent headed by Mr L. McDowell, The report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr J. S. Adam: vice-presidents. Messrs D. Gibson and A. G. Dumbleton; secretary, Mr H, J. Hay; auditor. Mr J. F. Harrison; W.O. representative on Gore Executive, Mr T. L. Macdonald, M.P.; committee— Messrs P. V. Quin, C. Sim (Tapanui), J. W. Andrew, P. Rentoul (Kelso), M. Dillon, O. Brownlie (Heriot), R. H. Nicol, C. S. Duff (Edievale), N. Berry. A. J, Hodgkin (Moa Flat), A. Bathgate, D. Morrison (Crookston). The secretary reported that the sale of poppies had resulted as follows: Tapanui £ll, Heriot £5, Edievale £1 17s, Dunrobin £1 10s, Crookston £3 9s. and Kelso £5 3s 6d. This total of £27 19s 6d compared favourably with last year’s amount. The secretary was voted the sum of £5 5s for his services during the year. It was decided that wooden crosses be erected in the Tapanui and Crookston Cemeteries on the graves of all returned soldiers. | Shooting The Tapanui Defence Rifle Club fired the second Cup Match on Saturday, when there was a moderate attendance. Ploughing: Association With a view to forming a district Ploughing Match Association, an enthusiastic meeting attended by 22 prospective members was held at Kelso last week. The convener (Mr J. A. McDonald) spoke of the desirability of such an association in the district. After several other speakers had spoken in favour of the venture, it was decided to form an association, to be known as the West Otago Ploughing Match Association. The following officers were elected: — President. Mr J. A. McDonald; vicepresidents—Messrs D. Jenkins, B Chittock and Andrew Smith; secretary and treasurer, Mr B. Baxter; executivepresident, vice-presidents. Messrs J. Andrew, R. Kirk, S. McKenzie, E. McAuley and E. Gutschlag: all present to form a General Committee. It was decided to hold the first match on June 28. to be followed by a dance in the Kelso Hall. The selection of a suitable ground for the match was left to the executive.

The Waimea Plains Ploughing Match will be held at Wendon on Saturday. June 24.
