DEPLETION OF STERLING CHARGE OF INTRIGUE "CERTAIN INTERESTS” AT WORK (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 17. “ I suggest that the drain on the London funds between the end of August and the end of October last year, and particularly during September and October, was the result of a deliberate determination on the part of certain interests to face the Government with a financial crisis if it succeeded in the elections,” said Mr J. Thorn, M.P., in a by-election speech at Somerfield to-night. “ Certain powerful financial interests,” Mr Thorn declared, “endeavoured to force such a position. -1 A voice: Name them! Mr Thorn: Ah! But they are anonymous. If we could name them we could probably lodge them in one of his Majesty’s institutions. Mr Thom also claimed that during October, 1938, “ a hidden run ” occurred on the Post Office Savings Bank, prompted by powerful political opponents of the Labour Party.
