TROTTING AT FORBURY

—— THE WINTER MEETING OPENED LIGHTNING LADY PRINCIPAL WINNER FERRY POST BEATS SPRINTERS INCREASED TOTALISATOR RETURNS

The Forbury Park Trotting Chubs winter meeting was opened in weather true to name. A very cold southerly wind blew during the atfernoon. but beyond the suggestion of a shower rain did not fall The track provided good firm going, but the conditions were not an assistance to displays of speed. Despite the uninviting weather a good attendance viewed the racing, which was full of interest from start to finish. ' The field of 17 that went to the post for the Bayfield Handicap gave a poor exhibition of trotting. The majority in the field went to a break at different parts of the race, Chudleigh began well, and, maintaining an even gait, made a one-horse race of it. A full card faced the starter for the Domain Handicap, and investors were on the right track, as the favourite, Loyal Rey, won well at the finish after being well placed all the way. The winer went omin 18 2-ssec from a 3mm 37sec mark, and the fact accounted for the decisive win. Attain and Ivy Petersen dropped out of the Beach Han dicap. Gold Bank and Coherto lost ground at the start, and Silver Laddie broke when one of the leaders at the end of the first furlong. Purina made most of the running, with Privateer in close attendance. Once in line for home Privateer came on and won from Gay Avon, and King Potts, who was unlucky in hot getting an opening In the straight. Dan McGrew faded after being third behind Privateer and Gay Avon in the straight. The Ritchie Memorial Handicap was a farcical affair when regarded as a two mile race. Ferry Post stood on the mark and Sea Gift soon took charge and went a slow half-mile in Imin 9sec- and a mile in 2min 24sec. She was still in charge at the end of a mile and a-half in 3min 32sec. and then the pace improved. The field was bunched at the start of the final half-mile, and Sea Gift still remained in charge as they came round the home turn from Hor.se Power, Lightning Lady, and Nell Grattan racing in close order. Lightning Lady had the most speed in the run home, and won by two lengths from Nell Grattan, who beat Horsepower by a head. Marsceres was half a length away, and then came Marlene and Sea Gift. The last half-mile was run in Imin 3sec.

front and drew out to a four lengths’ lead from Rowi, Marfax, Royal Thread, and Axspear and this was the order as they ran down the back Great Joy stil, had charge as they entered the straight for the second time and hard on his heels were Rowi and Seascape, with Loyal Rey and Axspea l lying next. Seascape drew up to the leader as they raced along the back, with Rowi going well just behind them, and Axspear half a length behind Rowi. Seascape led into the straight from Rowi and Loyal Rey, but in the run for home Loyal Rey went to the front and stayed on to win bythree lengths, with Axspear a short length away. Marfax was fourth.Times: 3min l 9 2-Ssec. 3min 20 2-ssec, 3min 2lsec. BEACH HANDICAP. Of £2OO. Winner to receive £l5O, second £35. third £ls. One mile and a-half Class 3.30. 6/5 —Privateer, Mr O. E. Black Surprise, Central Lad, Palomar and Tawny settled their chance at the start of the? Victory Handicap. The finish became identified with good dividends, as the winner paid over double figures and the third horse paid over a score and a-half. The early leaders, Foremost Junior, Guywin, Don Acron and Adverse all faded at the business end.

Peggotty was made favourite for the St. Clair Handicap, and although not too well placed five furlongs from home, then began a good run and when putting in a fast finish went to a break about 60 yards from home. She caught her gait and came on to finish a close third. They went the first half mile in Imin 7sec. Bittersweet put up the best finish, and won jom Blue Logan, but Lament, after being in charge for the bulk of the iournev collapsed in the straight. Southern Chief broke at the start of the Renown Handicap, and Van Derby, after getting assistance went away, but broke in the first furlong. Gay Avon set the pace, but about three furlongs from home Acuity shot away to the front and had the finish to himself. Windsor Lass looked a winner in the Flying Handicap when in charge at the far turn but she stopped and Ferry Post beat Red Pigeon bv a narrow margin. The totalisator handled £18.837 10s (£8529 win and £10.308 10s place), compared with £16,121 for the cor* responding day last year, when the single pool system of betting was in operation. The Two-mile Record

When Spear Chief beat Wotan's Australasian two-mile record in Brisbane recently the electric timing clock was not operating but the watch-holder was a man of experience and his time was confirmed by other watches in the trainers' stand. McCarten expressed surprise when told about the time, and said Spear Chief could easily have beaten the world's record had he been pushed. Spear Chief’s time, 3min I93sec, was oetter than Wotan’s, and the world’s record is 3min 19 l-ssec, by Within the Law, at York, England. Spear Chief carried 9.7. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES May 13. —Forbury Park T.C. May 27 -Canterbury Park T.C. May 27, 31.—Auckland T.C. June s.—Ashburton T.C. Wrack The death is reported from Australia of the imported stallion Wrack, the sire of Indianapolis and other highclass performers. Marsceres Although nothing of an official nature was gathered, it is understood that an inquiry is pending into the cause of Marsceres stumbling at the start of the final lap of the Ritchie Memorial Handicap. Falsely-run Race The card for the opening day at Forbury provided interesting racing and also a falsely-run race in connection with the Ritchie Memorial Handicap. A dub outs on a race as a test of stamina, and it is allowed to become a half-mile sprint. Southern Chief After breaking at the start of the Renown Handicap. Southern Chief closely trailed the fast-travelling Van Derby until reaching the straight. Won on Speed The two-rnile distance nominally attached to the Ritchie Memorial Handicap was reduced to a half-mile sprint, and the - ace was won on speed. One-horse Race As an indication that large fields do not necessarily provide a good race or a racing spectacle, it may be pointed out that the Bayfield Handicap, with 17 starters became a one-horse race Rowi Rowi went 3min 20 2-ssec from a 3min 38sec mark in the Domain Handicap but had no chance with Loyal Rey. who went 3min 18 2-ssec from 3min 37sec. A fairly strong southerly breeze was blowing during the race A Stumble

Marsceres was up with the packed field with five furlongs to go in the Ritchie Memorial Handicap, but struck trouble and stumbled badly. Horsepower Horsepower looked a possibility in the Ritchie Memorial Handicap when turning for home with Sea Gift, but in the dash for home both Lightning Lady and Nell Grattan beat him for speed. Bittersweet Bittersiveel, the winner of the St. Clair Handicap, was sold to go to Australia some few weeks ago. but the deal fell through If the deal had been completed Bittersweet would not have been on the scene.

An Inquiry An inquiry was held into Privateer’s running in the Beach Handicap as compared with his display at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting. The explanation was accepted, but information concerning the nature of the explanation was refused.

Lightning Lady There is no doubt about Lightning Lady being smart, but something rather vague exists about her pedigree on the distaff side. If racing is conducted for the improvement of the breed lack of information in that direction becomes an unpardonable laxity of control. Peggotty Peggotty was putting in a good run in the last half mile when she went to to a break about 60 yards from home. She caught back Quickly and finished third. The break cost her a fair chance of carrying her speed home as a winner. Peggotty was cutting a final half mile out at a Imin 4sec clip. Van Derby

Van Derby put in a skip after going a furlong in the Renown Handicap, but then settled down and went a solid race. He was attempting to give seven seconds away to an easy winner in 4min 27sec. Van Derby went a mile in 2min Bsec and two miles in 4min 17 3-ssec. Van Derby was big in condition and in a heavy lather after the race, but apparently fairly clean in the wind. A Slow Record

The field for the Ritchie Memorial Handicap was open to a charge of “ furious loitering.’’ They took 2min 24sec for the first mile, and this constitutes a record for slow travelling in the first half otf a two mile race on a firm track. There seems to be a cast-iron idea that a pacemaker is sure to suffer defeat at the finish, but this can be carried to extremes. The field was bunched at the half-mile from home, and that section was cut out in Imin 3sec,

Money Queen Though bred to be a trotting champion, Money Queen has not fulfilled the promise many good judges anticipated she would She is by that great trotter Peterwah, 4min 23 4-ssec, who was imported from America by Mr R C Fisken The dam of Money Queen is Elzoar, who won many races in New Zealand, including a Dominion Trotting Cup. In that race she was driven by the veteran reinsman J McLennan, who is now stationed at Gore. Elzear was by Petereta (son of Peter the Great) and was one of the late W J Tomkinson’s team Petereta sired many high-class horses including Reta Peter, winner of two New Zealand Trotting Cups. SPECIAL TRAIN DELAYED LATE ARRIVAL OF HORSES Complaints were received by us yesterday from owners of trotting horses regarding the late arrival of the special train from Christchurch on the previous day. The (rain carried a number of horses having engagements at Forbury Park and it was alleged that in addition to the unavoidable delay caused by the derailment of a train at Bankside there were unnecessary stoppages on the remainder of the journey. The complaint was referred to the Railways Department, and we have received from the district traffic manager the following explanation of (he delay;— " In reply to your inquiry respecting the late running of the special train conveying horses to Dunedin on 10th instant. I have to inform you that the excessive delay was primarily due to a serious main line derailment that occurred to a goods train near Bankside in the early hours of the morning As a result of this derailment main line traffic was disorganised for some hours, and after the line had been cleared for traffic a severe speed restriction was necessary over about three miles of track The train in question was almost four hours late leaving Ashburton and arrived in Dunedin five hours and a-quarter behind schedule “ In consequence of the disorganisation of services the horse train lost its position in relation to other opposing trains and was worked through to the best possible advantage "This train was given reasonableprecedence over opposing trams and slight delays at crossing places were inevitable II would have been nllo gother impracticable to hold all oppos ing trains in order to give priority and tin uninterrupted run to the horse train. This unfortunate delay is regretted ” RACING IN ENGLAND NEWMARKET STAKES (United Press dissociation - (Bv Fleet Tel eg .mh Copyright > LONDON May 10 The Newmarket Stakes £2023 mile and a-quarter. resulted:— Fairstone • 1 Cockpit 2 Hastings 3 Nine started. RICCARTON NOTES SMART GALLOPS (Special to Daily Times! CHRISTCHURCH, May 11. A bitterly cold south-east wind made the conditions unpleasant at Riccarton this morning for the final gallops by horses engaged at the Ashburton meeting. The No. 1 grass track and the plough were in good order. On the Grass Blue Coat beat Lady Kinnoull over half a mile up the back in 49 2-ssec, while Tantivy was just in front of In the Dark down the straight in 49 4-ssec. Nightcaim. after doing 48 3-ssec for half a mile along the back, completed a mile in Imin 42 3-ssec. Donade- sprinted half a mile in 48 4-ssec, a good effort. Settlement with The Wrecker as a mate for the last six furlongs, covered a mile in Imin 41sec. the first half in 49sec They were on terms at the end vf a good gallop. Wagner and Comus took 50 4-ssec lor half a mile, Miss Tasta and Real Lady registering 49 3-ssec. Rebellion went well to do five furlongs in Imin 2 3-ssec. Dracula hit out freely over a mile in Imin 45sec Dictate and Wardress put up a good performance over six furlongs in Imin 14sec Dictate being half a length in front Shangn La and Elegy were well matched over seven furlongs in Imin 29 4-ssec. Knight Commander and Chief Lama took Imin 30sec. Night Hawk and Parquet ran a mile in good style in Imin 42sec. doing the last half in 50 3-ssec. Glenogil and Trumpeter Sound went up the back in 49 3-ssec, On the Plough Paper Slipper went in free style over five furlongs in Imin 2 3-ssec, while Wild Chase covered seven in Imin 28 2-ssec the last' three in 38 sec. Jumeaux dashed over three furlongs up the back in 36 4-ssec. Maroha took Imin 6sec for five furlongs. while Nolana and The Duel ran half a mile in 50sec Lady Leigh, brought home by the Shambles—Loch Tava gelding, reeled off six furlongs in Imin 15sec, a smart effort. Haughty Winner and Rabble ran seven furlongs in Imin 29sec, with not much between them, Nightdress and Rex Maitland following in Imin 28 2-ssec. Garonne and Waitaka were well matched over five furlongs in Imin 3sec. Jumping Cottingham (R. Beale) jumped big over two hurdles and then went over three fences. Culverden (A. Stove) and Kaipear (J. Sullivan) set off for a school over the fences. After jumping the brush at the back Kaipear blundered at the sod wall. He repeated the mistake when caught, but afterwards completed the circuit at a slow pace Culverden went over the three fences in the straight in good style. Pladie (A, Stove) and Gayspear (J. Sullivan) were tried first over the pony hurdles and then went at a moderate pace over the big hurdles. ASHBURTON RACES MEETING AT RICCARTON (Special to Daily Tlmes) CHRISTCHURCH, May 11. With so many horses in training good fields were assured for the autumn meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club, while the fact that Saturday’s racing is to take place at Riccarton, owing to the club’s building scheme being incomplete, has attracted extra support. It should be one of the most successful meetings the club has held. Betting, as usual, will be on the win and place system. The Ashburton Cup has drawn a great field, among the 17 acceptors being six horses that took part in the Great Autumn Handicap, and six that raced well in the chief events at Riverton. It includes all the best South Island horses that are in training at present. Wild Chase, the top-weight, has not won since the Manawatu Cup, on Boxing Day, but he was second in the Dunedin Cup, and now meets the winner, Queen of Song, on 71b better terms. He did not run in the Great Autumn, but he meets most of the starters in that event on much better terms. Queen of Song raced well each day at Washdyke, and she provides a line on several others that raced there. Rabble won twice, and taking the second day figures, he now meets the others on worse terms —Dictate (second) s!b, Thermidor (third) 51b, Foxlove (fourth) 91b, Queen of Song 91b, Milford 91b, Settlement 9!b, Parquet 81b. Night Hawk 81b, and Mungatoon 81b. On the figures, Rabble will require to show further improvement to beat some of this lot again. Apart from that, no rider has been secured, nor for Haughty Winner, a horse that has found a mile and a-quarter too far. Of the horses that Rabble beat at Washdyke. Dictate, Thermidor, Foxlove, Queen of Song, Milford and Settlement are all liable to take part in another good finish, for though Settlement failed badly on the second day, he showed up well in the Timaru Cup, on the fii'st day, as well as in the Great Autumn Handicap.

Prior to Washdyke, Milforq and Foxlove won at Riverton, where Mungatoon and Thermidor raced well. Passaform was a winner there, and Nightdress was placed. Riverton form definitely brings Passaform and Nightdress into the picture for the Ashburton Cup. Viewed from any angle, it should be an exciting race. In Paper Slipper the club has been fortunate in attracting the best sprintei in the South Island and he will be racing on his favourite course. He is in good form and even under his big weight should be prominent. Nightcalm only needs (o repeat his Washdyke form fo be dangerous Thermidor is smart, but may be more at home in the Cup. Roy Bun has been racing well lately in moderate com pany Land Raid did not impress at Amberley. Lady Leigh has not won lately, but she is in form while the conditions will suit her.

Cottingham showed brilliant form when he won the Grand National Hurdles That was 21 months ago. and he has not had a start as a iumpet since then, though three months latei he won in good style on the flat a! Riccarton. He jumped big when schooled this week, hut the main thing against him may be that he has not had a race for a vear and a-half Dividend may not be quite at rus nest vet, but ho is a highly promising young hurdler Jewish Lad and Dracnla will meet on the same terms as when the former won on the first day at Washdyke—narrowly but perhaps n nsily Survov has no curdle form The Wrecker the top-weight in the EitTclton Handicap, has not raced since lie appeared in Australia in the spring Plumage is a greatly improved mare with two wins and (wo places in her last four starts Rebellion is not con sistent but will be dangerous if he repeats the form that saw him nar i-owly beaten on the first dav at Washdyke where Phenomenal won in maider: class Real Lady beat Nolana narrowtv at Arnbericy with Tanfivv Dnnadea and Miss Tasta behind them Tantivy may do best of this Int at Riccarton where he won at Easter Of the horses in the Trial Stakes Fascinator should have peneflted by her run at Amberley where she had her first race hut Swinetime heat her there and will anm-eei'afe thr shorter tourney Papernilla has on several occasions -one well m races -if this tvpe

Pink Dress ran vers well each day at Washdyke where Blue Coat finished on strongly in his only start, after a slow beginning He is a likely sort Stylist showed promise at Easter Jumcoux Ravine has speed and only needs race experience. Trumpeter Sound is a colt that may go on to good class next season.

The Fairfield Handicap has a very big field, including a number of horses with recent form. Waitoru was narrowly beaten at Washdyke, where Wardress also ran well. So did Elegy, but a mile is short enough for her. Shanghai Lily and Screamer appeal more than Shangri La and Garonne on Amberley form, but The Duel may run better over the shorter journey Skyrena and Pol Roger have done some winning lately, but in moderate company. Glenacre and Rex Maitland are capable of useful form, if in the mood Plumage may be more at home over the shorter iournev earlier in the day. « The following riding arrangements have been made: M. Caddy, Trumpeter Sound. Real Lady. Night Hawk. Shangri La. Waitaka: A. E. Ellis, Dictate The Wrecker. Skyrena; H, W. Hibberd, Fascinator. Tantivy. Thermidor. Glenacre; C.
