ATHLETIC SHIELD OTAGO'S SUBSTANTIAL LEAD J. L. ADAMS'S NEW RECORD In an interesting afternoon's display of atnletics, whicn was considerably enlivened by the amusing comments of tne announcer and the antics of the various haka parties, Otago University estaoiished a substantial lead over the other rivals for the athletic shield at the University Oval on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine, and the tracks were in excellent order. Two track and four field events were decided, and a number of preliminaries run off. The outstanding race of the afternoon was the mile, in. which B. W. Nixon (Otago University) fought out a great finish with K. W. Robinson (Canterbury) to win by a yard. The furlong title went to C. V. Adams (Victoria), who had a stronger finish than H. A. Steele (O'.ago). J. L. Adams (Otago) registered an outstanding performance in throwing the discus event. He improved upon his own record by over 15ft in a special throw. R. G. Pilling (Otago) scored a decisive win in the Broad Jump, and J. L. Vosailagi (Otago) created a mild surprise by winning the Pole Vault. J. G. Cutler (Auckland) easily retained his Hammer Throw title. In the preliminary events, the most notable performance was that of H. D. Ramsay (Otago) in winning his heat of the 220 Yards Hurdles in 26 2-ssec, which equalled A. T. Anderson's record. The following are the results:— 220 Yards ' Present champion: A. R. Duff (0.U.). New Zealand University record: Straight track. 22 3-ssec, F. H. Stevenson (V.U.C.), 1933; circular track, 22 3-ssec. SWIMMING EVENTS OTAGO WINS SHIELD NEW RECORDS ESTABLISHED Otago and Auckland had a keen tussle for the swimming shield, and it was not until the final event—the Relay Championship—was decided that the home university was able to make certain of the trophy. At the commencement of this race Otago had 10 points, and Auckland eight, with a chance of making a tie of it, but Otago won the Relay comparatively easily, and put the issue beyond doubt, the final totals being: Otago 12 points, Auckland 9, and Canterbury 4. Victoria College did not score a point. Fairly good fields faced the starter, and the heats, which were decided in the morning, sent forward some speedy swimmers for the finals in the evening, when every available inch of seating accommodation in the Municipal Baths was occupied. There were one of two surprises in the evening, notably the defeat of the Canterbury swimmer, Miss E. B. Frye. in the 100 Yard's Women's Championship by Miss J. Morice, the Otago representative, and the victory of J. H. Neville (Otago) over C. R. Buchanan, of Auckland, in the 100 Yards Men's Freestyle event. As was expected, the New Zealand National champion, J. C. W. Davies, had no difficulty in retaining his 220 Yards Men's. Breaststroke title, but it was unfortunate that the other two swimmers who opposed him were disqualified for swimming incorrect

breaststroke, and were, moreover, unable to push him along. Had he been challenged Davies would probably have bettered his time—3min 0 l-ssec —which equalled the New Zealand national record and lowered his own New Zealand University record by Ave seconds. A further new record was established when another Otago swimmer, C. Foote, returned 73 3-ssec for the Men's 100 Yards Backstroke Championship, which improved on the previous best time by 3 l-ssec. The Women's Breaststroke Championship was responsible for another crop of disqualifications, the only one of the three starters to swim correctly being the winner, Miss J. Eastgate. who, in any case, would have scored a comfortable victory. During the evening exhibitions of swimming were given by Messrs R. Geddes, W. Dyson, J. C. W. Davies, K. Leckie, and Miss C. Garvin, and Miss G. Rix gave a display of diving. At the conclusion of the swimming events a water polo match was played between teams representing the North and South Islands Universities, the game ending in a draw —one goal The following were the results:— 60 Yards Women's Freestyle Present champion: Miss E. SERVICE AT FIRST CHURCH LARGE GATHERING OF STUDENTS There was a large gathering of delegates to the New Zealand Universities tournament in First Church last night, when a special tournament service was conducted by the Rev. W. Allen Stevely. Dr Galway was at the organ and Mr A. Walmsley sang the solo "Yea, Though I Walk." Speaking on the text "Lo, 1 Am With You Alway," Mr Stevely said the triumph of Easter was the assurance of a living Redeemer. Jesus Christ had His witnesses in every sphere. He had notable ones in the realm of athletics, such as Eric Liddell, the distinguished Olympic champion, and for all the problems of the woyld and for all the tasks of individual life they had available the invincible resources of Christ. Life was triumphant when they lived under the inspiration of the risen Redeemer, whose words—"Lo, I am With You, were the guarantee of guidance, comfort and victory.
