MILITARY CADETS

COURSE AT DUNTROOM COLLEGE FIVE BOYS SELECTED TWO FROM DUNEDIN {Pi* United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 10. Five New Zealand cadets have been selected to attend a three years' course at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Australia, with a view to qualifying as officers in the New Zealand military forces. The cadets are: F. B. Chennells (Christchurch), J. B. McGregor (Dunedin), J. A. McPherson (Dunedin), B. F. Sceats (Gisborne), and R. J. HWebb (Nelson). Announcing the names in an interview this evening, the Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones) said this was in accordance with the Government's policy of close co-operation with Australia in defence matters. "I had.the opportunity," the Minister said, " of seeing the successful applicants for cadetships after they had completed a six days' course at the Army School at Trentham, and I was most impressed with their bearing. They are all of a fine stamp, With scholastic and athletic qualifications above the average, and, having decided to take up the army as a profession, will, I feel sure, maintain the high standard set in the, past by New Zealand cadets at Durittpon. During their secondary school training all five were outstanding members of their respective cadet corps. I wish them all success in their chosen career." Athletic Attainments The following are particulars of the athletic attainments of the five cadets>-F. B. Chennells attended the Medbury Preparatory School at Fendalton until 14 years old, and then entered Christ's College for four vears. He represented the college in the first Rugby fifteen and was a member of the senior rowing four. He took part in college athletics as a 220 yards runner, and fn his final year was heavy-weight boxing champion. ■ J. B. McGregor attended the Forbury Primary School and was at the Otago Boys' High School for two years, then going to the King's High School, for three years. At King's he was a member of the first Rugby fifteen and was captain of the cricket eleven in 1937 and 1938. He was senior swimming champion in these two years and is in possession of a first class instructor's certificate in life saving. He also holds the bronze medallion with three IJ. A. McPherson attended the North-east Harbour Primary School, foing to the Otago Boys' High chool in 1934. He was a member of the first Rugby fifteen, he was senior swimming champion and senior distance champion in athletics and was also Otago junior champion in the 440 and 880 yards. As a boxer he reached championship class. . B. F. Sceats received his primary education at the Marist Brothers' School till 1936 and then attended the Gisborne Higl. School in 1937 and 1938. He was vice-captain of the first Rugby fifteen for those two years and he held the school boxing championship for 1938, Rl J. H: Webb attended Nelson College from 1930 when he entered the primary classes. He was a prefect in 1937. A member of the first Rugby fifteen and captain of the second cricket eleven, he was thir'd in the senior athletic cup, and won the 100 yards' open handicap. He also represented the school in swimming and lawn tennis and was prominent in the college rifle championship.
