The new tourist road which will make Milford Sound accessible to motorists is being steadily pushed ahead on the western side of the Alps. On the left is a view looking up the south branch of the Cleddau Valley with the Homer Saddle in the distance. The saddle is being pierced by the Homer tunnel, which will connect the road through the Eglinton and Hollyford Valleys with Milford Sound. On the Milford side the road has reached a point just out of the picture on'the lower left, and it will run through the valley in the foreground. An idea of the scenic beauties of the region is given in the picture on the right. It is a view from the new road one mile from Milford. The Barrier Range can be seen in the distance.
PREVENTING EROSION OF THE. BED OF THE LEITH During the recent floods the bed of the Water of Leith was scoured in, some parts. At; the point below St. David street shown in this picture men are seen constructing a weir across the stream to prevent the bed being lowered by work has been in progress the foundations of the bridge have been strengthened.
