APPEAL FOR FUNDS LOCAL COMMITTEE FORMED A meeting was held in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon under the chairmanship of Mr M. C. Henderson for the purpose of forming a local committee to prosecute the campaign for funds for Chinese refugee children. Those present were constituted the committee and Mr Henderson was elected chairman. Miss N. Dallaston was appointed honorary secretary and the Town Clerk (Mr R. A. Johnston) treasurer. An executive comprising the Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen), Mr Hendersdn and the secretary was also set up, and Messrs R. Law, H. Ninnis and the Revs. J. Malcolm and A. L. Miller were appointed a publicity committee. A general discussion took place on various methods of raising funds and a number of suggestions was put forward for the consideration of the Publicity Committee. These included a street appeal, community .sings, a concert at which it is hoped to secure the attendance of Mrs Feng Wang, wife of the Chinese Consul for New Zealand, moving pictures for exhibition in schools and a children's demonstration.--.

It was agreed that an appeal should be made to all the churches in the city and suburbs, and it was also decided to approach the Education Board and boards of governors of secondary schools with a view ,to having one or more Chinese children adopted by each school in the education district.

A further meeting of the committee will be held in two weeks' time.
