Mrs Stanley Batchelor gave a smaL luncheon party at the Otago Women’s Club yesterday in honour of Mrs C. T. Irvine, of Auckland. The other guests were: Mrs May, Mrs J. M. Gallaway, Miss Gallaway, and Miss Irvine.

In honour of Mrs William Sargood, of New South Wales, Mrs F. M. Oldham gave a luncheon party on Tuesday in the Otago Women’s Club, and yesterday was hostess at an_ afternoon tea party at her home in Cargill street.

The president and members of the Otago branch of the New Zealand Federation of University Women will be “at home” this evening in Allen Hall in honour of the delegates attending the Dominion conference, which opens to-morrow at 2.30 p.m.

Miss Elizabeth Loe. of London, until recently a British Drama League tutor from the Central School of Dramatic Art, London, and the Hull Repertory Theatre, to the New Zealand branch of the league, is now making her home in Auckland. j The death has occurred at Milford-on-Sea of Miss Winifred L. BoysSmith, formerly of the University of Otago (states the Morning Post’s cor- | respondent, writing from London on January 5). Miss Boys-Smith had been living in England for some years. At one time she was a voluntary worker on the staff of the Rothamsted ; Experimental Station, where she was ! engaged upon work in connection with illustrations for the British Empire exhibit. Miss Boys-Smith was 73. I * * * Prior to her recent marriage Miss Evelyn Harvey, of Omakau, was the guest at several gift afternoons. Hostesses included Mrs J. H. Truesdale and Mrs J. T. Miss G. M. Parry, of Port Chalmers, has concluded her year as exchange teacher at the Stanhope Infant School (says our London correspondent, writing on January 5). She left for New York on December 30, en route fpr Vancouver, and expects to arrive in Auckland on February 7. During her stay here Miss Parry observed , some very interesting methods in infant schools, and she attended various classes, from which she feels she has derived great benefit. Miss Parry spoke very highly of the good work done by the League of the Empire on behalf of the exchange teachers and of the advantages the teachers are able to gain by this system. Miss Parry, who is a native of Wales greatly enioyed a visit to her native land, and also she was able to make an interesting tour of England and Scotland, as well as one on the Continent v v v
