PENINSULA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council was held at Portobello yesterday, the chairman CCr J. Cross) presiding. There were also present Crs. D. Rutherford, W. V. Sturmer. W. Brookman. T. S. Edmonds, J. J. Nyhon, J. T. Irvine. J. W. Harbrow, and D, J, S. Robertson. General

A letter was received from Mrs I. Wright, District road, Waverley, asking that something be done to improve the road outside her home.—Referred to Cr Sturmcr with power to act.

F. W. Craddock. Beach street, wrote asking for permission to install a septic tank.—Granted. A similar request from W. G. Hitchcox, Beach street, Grant’s; Braes, was also granted. Mrs M. E. Brown made application for permission to cut an entrance into her property, Broad Bay.—Referred to Cr Nyhon, with power to act. The secretary of the Public Library Committee, wrote asking the council not to grant control to the North-East Harbour Ratepayers and Householders’ Association of the ground occupied by the North-East Harbour Public Library, or of the section immediately behind this building, as it would be required for proposed improvements to the library buildings in the near future.— Cr Brookman Was deputed to discuss the matter with the Library Committee and the Ratepayers’ Association. A circular from the Otago Provincial Centennial Committee was received again asking /the council to assist financially Otago’s representation at the Centennial Exhibition. On a population basis the council would be expected to contribute £l3o.—lt was decided that in view of the county’s financial position, it would not be possible to make a contribution. Highways Board The district Highways Council reported that the Main Highways Board would be in Dunedin on February 6 and would be willing to discuss any matters which the council desired to bring up.—The chairman suggested that the council’s main object should be to get more of its roads made highways. It was time that the road to Cape Saunders was imotoved, as it was carrying a heavy load of traffic. — Cr Robertson maintained that the Upper road down the peninsula should be tar sealed. A deputation consisting of Messrs Cross Nyhan, Robertson, Harbrow and Sturmer was appointed to meet the members of the Highways Board on February fi. Engineer’s Report

The county e’erk (Mr J. Seaton) reported as follows on the work carried out during the mc.th:— High, Road.—Slips have been cleared and water tables attended to on various sections of the road. Screenings have teen spread on bare places, particularly on the Pukehiki-Dunedin section.

Portobello-Harrington Point Road. — Slips have been cleared and culverts opened. A track has been cut through the sand slip at Harrington Point, but there is a considerable quantity of material still to be removed. Metal has been spread on bare patches of the road. „ Riddell’s-Hooper’s Inlet Road.— v/ater tables have been cleaned on the hill section, and the dangerous washout in the sea wall near Mr J. Porterfield's house has been attended to. A culvert has been laid to can? storm water across the road at this point, and no further trouble should be experienced. _ Portobello-Cape Saunders Road.— The work of cutting a track through the slip on this road has been completed, and metcl spread, Attention has been given on several occasions to small portions Which are liable to be damaged by traffic, and a stock of rock is deposited near this work to facilitate repairs when necessary. Metal has been spread on the broken surface of the road at the Anglican Church. . Sandymount Riding.—Water tables have been cleared on the Ridge road. Highcliff Riding.—The slip on Craigie and Harrington’s road has been cleared, and water tables have been cleaned on Paradise road Attention has been given to the slip on Dustric, road, and metal spread to improve the road surface, Tomahawk Riding.—A wash-out has been repaired in Glen street, and culvert mouths have been opened on the Valley road. . North-East Harbour Ruling.—Potholes have been patched in front of Woodhouse’s store, and grass has been cut on the township roads Attention is at present being given to the levelling of the reserve, and men are at present engaged quarrying stone for metalling recently-widened roads. Broad Bay Riding.—Grass has been cut on the roads in the Broad Bay and Portobello townships Further progress has been made with the wall at Helensburgh township, and the metalling of the newly-formed road approaching Colquhoun street has been completed. Meta] has been spread where required or, several roads in the Portobello township. Portobello Riding.—Culverts have been cleared on Lewis road, and water tables cleaned on Weir's line. The work of clearing slips on Kinnaird road is nearing completion. Grader. —The grader has been employed on the thr°e highways, General. —Owing to the faci that there is water lying on the flats in Wickliffe Bay, it will not be possible to have survey work carried out in connection with the formation of Riddell’s road for some weeks. Recent heavy winds have damaged the road leading to Mr A. G. Neil’s property, and repairs have been effected Considerable damage has been done to the sea wall at Harrington Point and also at Pero’s Point and Carem’s Rock. The surface on the Portobello-Cape Saunders road has also been damaged by water.
