REMOVING WAR’S CAUSES

“One of the greatest facts which has emerged from recent heartshaking experiences lias been the universality of the human longing for peace. Nowhere do the common people desire war,” said the Bishop of Cichester (Dr Bell) in a recent address. “It seems to me that it will be both a tragic mistake and a grievous crime if, in all the countries concerned, we do not make the very utmost of this universal hunger, on the part of the common people, now. We shall not be making the most of that universal hunger for peace if we accept the policy of concentrating all our resources on a far more complete preparation fof war, and think of nothing else at all. X am no lover of Nazi methods. But one supreme advantage which came out from the meetings between Mr Chamberlain and Herr Hitler was mutual knowledge based upon personal intercourse. I believe myself that if the British people are prepared to handle the situation between Great Britain and Germany with the same courage and resource that Mr Chamberlain showed by seeing Hitler face to face, a new chapter may begin for the whole of Europe. But, in order that such a new chapter may begin, it is indispensable that we should be ready to deal with the causes of antagonism now, to probe the sources of conflict, to negotiate a settlement of all German grievances, including the colonies, and ourselves to make the sacrifices which are necessary for such a settlement.”
