CITY POLICE COURT

Tuesday, January 10 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) Drunkenness Noel John Hagerty, who pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, was fined £l, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. —Two first offenders, similarly charged, were each fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. Breach of Probation ' James Phillip Clent, aged 27, who was represented by Mr J. G. Warrington, was charged with failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation.—Sergeant Lean explained that the accused had been admitted to probation, for two years at Wanganui in February, 1938, on terms that required him to report monthly and make resitution of £5 12s. He had last reported at Palmerston North in September, and only 5s had been paid by way of restitution. —Mr Warrinfton said that the accused was now in steady employment, but prior to securing this he had been working casually, so that to make payments regularly was difficult. It was to his credit that he had not been roaming about the streets, and the unfortunate feature of the matter seemed to be that he had not reported.—Taking into consideration all the facts, the magistrate convicted the accused and ordered him to come up for sentence any time if called on within 12 months.
