RAILWAY RAMPS
MONUMENT TO MR SEMPLE HUNDREDS OF LIVES SAVED iPer United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 10. In the 10 days of the Christmas and New Year holidays, said the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) to-day. he had heard enough praise of the Public Works and Transport Departments by the users of the highways to justify all connected with the policy, administration, and work of these departments feeling proud of their achievements. More efficient transport facilities, with less traffic congestion and accidents. had provided another side to New Zealand’s sturdy enterprise and sound reputation in public affairs. One commercial traveller, m referring to the ramps over the railways, had said in a group with whom he had discussion that each should bear a monument to Mr Semple. With these alone he must have saved hundreds of lives, and engine drivers from early retirement to nurse their nerves.
