INCREASED USE OF SERVICES RECORD CHRISTMAS POSTINGS (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON. Jan. 10. Between the week ended November 20, when the first appreciable increase caused by the Christmas postings became noticeable and the week ended December 23, the inland air services operating on New Zealand routes carried 331,139 letters and 2545 parcels. During Christmas week when the rush reached its peak, the total for letters carried by the inland air services rose from 50,000 for a week in mid-November to 68,445. a record since regular air mails were inaugurated early in 1936. In 1937 46,887 letters were carried by air during the> six days before December 25. and for the corresponding period last year the postings increased by 46 per cent. A new record was also established for the number of parcels carried by air. During Christmas week, 1937, 696 parcels were posted for transit by inland air mails, but last year’s postings for the same period totalled 845, an increase of 17J per cent. During the week ended November 20 1938, 279 parcels were carried, and with the exception of one week when a decrease occurred, the postings gradually increased as Christmas drew nearer. Air liners in New Zealand transported more letters in one day last Christmas than they were accustomed to handling in a week when the services were in their infancy.
