FARM LABOUR
SHORTAGE OF WORKERS * i CONFERENCE ON FEBRUARY 22 (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 10. Mr Cook, secretary of the New Zealand Workers’ Union, reports that the conference the union*has been seeking to discuss the shortage of farm labour and its solution will be opened in Wellington on February 22. His union, realising the shortage, instructed him to apply through the Minister of Labour to the Farmers’ Union and Sheep Owners’ Federation for a conference. This was done, and the Minister sought to bring the parties together. The farmers’ bodies suggested that the conference should be postponed till seasonal work was over, and should take place at the end of February or in March. He felt certain that if the Farmers’ Union representatives would meet the representatives of the workers, the parties would be able to reach an understanding on at least one all-im-portant matter —State assistance for providing suitable accommodation for farm labourers and their families in the farming areas.
