OBITUARY

MISS MARY CONEYS

The death has occurred of a wellknown figure in the nursing profession in Otago, Miss Mary Coneys, of Leith street, Dunedin. Miss Coneys was born in Dunedin and was educated at the Dominican Convent. On completing her education, she took up nursing and was trained in- the Dunedin Hospital. Later, she was appointed to the position of sister in the Westport Hospital, and after a few years on the West Coast, returned to Dunedin and was engaged in private nursing for some time. Sister Coneys paid a short visit to Australia, and. after returning to-New Zealand for a while, left for a trip to Great Britain and France. She returned to England shortly after the declaration of war and joined the British Army Nursing Unit. She gave devoted service in trance, and was mentioned in a despatch from General Sir Douglas Haig .for gallant and distinguished services in the field She returned to New Zealand in 1921 after a long holiday and was appointed to the Wakari Sanatorium, but, owing to failing health, she had to retire from the position. For,the past 10 years she had been in: bad health.

CHRISTCHURCH. Jan.B. The death is reported of Mr A. J. H. McMaster. Mr McMaster was the oldest son of the late Mr Alexander Anthony McMaster, of the Tokarahi Estate, North Otago, and a of the late Mr John Reid, of Elderslie, Oamaru. He was educated at the Kent Lodge Preparatory School and Christ's College. At Christs College he distinguished himself in all branches of sport, being m the first XV and in snooting teams. Aiier leaving Christ’s College, he went to Canteroury Agricultural College, where he was prominent in all faiming activities and, sport,, winning the athletic championship and breaking several records. After leaving Canterbury Agricultural College, Mr McMaster returned to assist hisfather in the management of the lokaiani Estate. Later he purchased the oatmoral Homestead in North Canterbury, where he remained until leaving for war service overseas. On his return after the war he farmed in South Canterbury and Pigeon Bay, Banks Peninsula. He retired Sight years ago and came to live in Christchurch. He is survived by his widow and four sons. MR C. C. WARNER (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND. Jan. 8. The death is announced of Mr C. C. Warner, ex-superintendent or tne Christchurch Fire Brigade, who retired after 25 years’ service in December, 1936. He was born at Hull. Yorkshire, in 1878, and educated in England He was an apprentice on the barque Casablanca for five years, and followed the sea until he secured his second mate s certificate. In 1902 he joined the staff of the Wellington Fire Brigade, and later became superintendent at Christchurch. He was one of the founders of the New Zealand Institute of Fire Engineers, ex-president, and a member of the Examining Board. He was also ex-president and secretary ol; the United Fire Brigades Association and president of the Fire Brigade Officers and Members’ Institute, During his service at Palmerston North in charge of a brigade of 16 volunteers three big fires occurred in one night and were fought simultaneously. MR A. W. PERCY (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 9. Mr Arthur .Welch Percy a wellknown authority on native flora, died at his residence in Mill road, Petone, yesterday, aged 75. He had on his property a miniature park containing practically every known native tree and shrub. Mr Percy belonged to a family of builders who did considerable work in Hutt Valley many years ago but he had been retired for a long period. His brothers and sisters predeceased him.
