CHILDREN’S COURT RETURNS STRIKING INCREASE IN FIGURES An alarming increase in juvenile crime in the Dunedin district is disclosed when comparison is made between the criminal court statistics for the quarter ended on December 31 last, and the corresponding period of the previous year. During the last three months of 1938, a total of 111 juveniles—lol boys and 10 girls—appeared before the Childrei’s Court in Dunedin, while for the 1937 period only 48 charges were laid against children, 41 of the defei.dants being boys, and seven girls. The number of charges laid in the City Police Court during the final quarter of last year was 578, and of these 553 were against males, and 2j agains females. Between October 1 and December 31. 1937, 615 males and 39 females came before the court Civil and criminal fees and fines paid in the last quarter of the old year, however, amounted to £1358 3s 3d, against £1244 13s for the corresponding three months of 1937.
Twenty-one civil sittines were held during the quarter, the number of plaints issued being 837, and the total amount sued for. £11,989 Is 9d.
