A FIGHTING SPEECH

PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT WARNING TO DEMOCRATS WASHINGTON, Jan. 7. (Received Jan. 8, at 11 p.m.) Clearly recognising that divisions of opinion are threatening his hold on the Congress, President Roosevelt, in a fighting speech to-night, invited “ Conservative Tweedledums” to leave the party and join the Republican “ Tweedledees.” The President declared that the Democrats must hold fast to the New Deal objectives and avoid dissension or risk repudiation in 1940. He also warned them that if the party nominated a Conservative or an opportunist as President, its control of power would be short-lived. Decrying alarmist reports of disunity, the President pointed out that he was the first President since James Monroe to serve two terms with majorities in both Legislatures. He added that the only trouble with the Democrats was that they had been feeding too well and scared easily.
