GRADE MATCHES KAIKORAI SCORE!) HEAVILY PLAY MARRED BY RAIN After a fine, hot morning, the weather on Saturday clouded over soon after mid-day, and rain marred play in the Otago Cricket Association’s grade competitions. A fresh series of matches was begun, but. after several adjournments, play in each game had to be abandoned for the day well before the scheduled time for drawing stumps. Kaikorai was responsible for the biggest scoring of the day. finishing in the good position of 202 for two wickets against Carisbrook B at Bishopscourt. Talbot and Mathias, who made 82 and 77 not out respectively, were mainly responsible for the score'; At Carisbrook, Albion made a bad start against Carisbrook A, losing three wickets for 39 runs. Old Boys, playing University at Tonga Bark, scored 120 for four wickets, and Grange batted first against Dunedin on the North Ground, and scored 91 for three wickets. Conditions on all grounds were much in favour of the batsmen. KAIKORAI SCORES WELL GOOD START AGAINST CARISBROOK B The Carisbrook B bowlers and fieldsmen had ari unenviable afternoon at Bishopscourt. Batting first for the first time this season, Kaikorai had a fine opportunity to score well, and took it. There were two or three stoppages because of rain, but stumps were not drawn until about 5.30 o’clock, by which time Kaikorai had scored 202 for two wickets. Runs came steadily, although not at a sensational rate at any stage. Talbot and Mathias were the run-getters. Talbot did not take chances, but hit loose balls hard and played some splendid hook shots and drives. He hit one six and 11 fours in his 82 not out. Mathias was very fortunate in having some easy catches dropped, one “ sitter ” being in the first over, and he went on to score steadily, mostly on the leg side and with a well-timed square cut. He hit nine fours in his 77 not out. The Carisbrook bowlers were very steady in the circumstances, and Walsh, particularly, deserved another wicket ,or two.
