THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, THURSDAY, JAN 9, 1868.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

There is little doubt now that the Duke of Edinburgh will visit Otago, and it is worthy of consideration what reception should be accorded to him. It would be folly to suppose that either New Zealand as a whole, or Otago, can aspire to offer to the Royal Visitor anything like such a gorgeous entertainment as that with which the Australian Colonies have greeted him. The magnificent displays upon which Victoria has lavished money like water are entirely beyond the means of New Zealand or Otago. . . ... It is very possible tor New Zealand, with the moderate means it has at its command, to make the Prince’s visit a pleasant one, and to enable him to carry away a favorable recollection, not only of the Colony, but of the people.

We believe that the preparations for the Agricultural Society’s Show to-day were thoroughly well advanced last evening; and that a very interesting exhibition may be expected The Cattle will be numerous and good; the Draught Horses will be numerous and of capita] quality; there will be a large show of leicesters: and as to Implements, a good deal of interesi is being taken in regard to the reapers, by different makers which are to be shown. It has been arranged to have a public luncheon within the Grand Stand in the show-yard (the North Recreation Ground), at two o’clock; and it is believed that His Honor, the Superintendent, will take the chair

It will be seen by an advertisement on another page that the Athenaeum Committee, at its monthly meeting on Monday last, resolved to invite tenders from owners of land deemed to be suitable as a site for a new building

The first annual Social meeting o t the Dunedin Grocers' Mutual Improvement Society was held last evening in Farley’s Hall. The meeting was one of the most pleasain of the kind vet held in Dunedin “ Punch ” hag not thus tar succeeded in establishing a taking literary standing in Dunedin. Another effort is about to be made, which we trust will

be successful. The illustrative department is to be under the superintendence of Mr B. Riemahn, (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (FROM OUU OWN CORRESPONDENT.) WELLINGTON. Wednesday. Mr Richmond returned last night from Auckland, and confirms yesterday’s telegram. During the interval between the departure of the Suez and Panama Mails, the Duke of Buckingham determined to request Sir George Grey to remain Governor until the Duke of Edinburgh's departure. Despatches reached Auckland just ■in time to prevent Sir George Grey's departure for Sydney in the Challenger. The news creates great satisfaction everywhere.
