GOLDEN WEDDING

MR AND MRS J. J. MARLOW ASSOCIATION WITH PUBLIC LIFE

A pleasantly informal gathering was held in the Somerset Lounge on Saturday evening when a large number of friends gathered to honour Mr and Mrs J. J. Marlow, of St. Kilda, on the occasion of their golden wedding. Mr Marlow, who has been prominent in the life of the city in many ways for a lengthy period, came to Dunedin as a boy some 60 years ago. He has remained here ever since, and the representative nature of the attendance at the function was indicative of the wide range of his interests and of the esteem in which he is held. Mr J Marlow, jun., occupied the chair, and in a happy speech welcomed the guests. The toast of Hie evening was proposed by Mr A. F Quelch, who said that Mr and Mrs Marlow had enjoyed an ideal family life, and Mr Marlow had established a remarkable record of service as a citizen. In this, he was sure that the sympathy and co-operation of Mrs Marlow had played a large part They had been blessed with a family of 10 children, nine of whom survived, and of these, no fewer than six had devoted their lives to the service of the church. Mr Marlow was a man of many hobbies apart from his business life and hi? public duties, and his energy was little short of amazing He and his wife had made a large circle of friends and, on behalf of all of them. Mr Quelch heartily congratulated the guests of the evening on having attained their jubilee, and expressed the sincere hope that they would be spared for many years vet to enjoy health and happiness. Mr O. Balk, Mr W A. Scott, and Mr J H Hinton also spoke in support of the toast, referring with gratitude to the long years of f ’endship they had enjoyed with Mr Marlcw and of their association with him in various capacities.

After the toast, “Mr and Mrs J. J. Marlow,” had been enthusiastically honoured. Mr Marlow replied. During the evening a number of musical and other items were contributed. f hose assisting being Messrs Hanna, Thomson, Gordon, and Tarrant. Mrs Muirhead played the musical accompaniments.
