ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY (Per United Press Association) GREYMOUTH. Jan. 8. Following are the Reefton Jockey Club’s acceptances for the second day:— 12.20 COUNTY HANDICAP, Of £7O. Six furlongs and a-halt.

January 23.—Ashhurst-Pohangina R.C. January 27 28.—Pahiatua R.C Density The smart sprinter Density is again in work at Riccarton. National The three-year-old National, who is showing good winning form in Australia, cost 120gns at the national sales. The Elderslic Stud The dispersal sale of the ElderslieStud will take place on Thursday at 2 p.m. Lacking in Class Otago and Southland have, apparently, not a horse that is considered good enough to nominate in the Wellington Cun. The Vincent Meeting Acceptances for the first day of the Vincent Jockey Club's meeting are due this evening at 7 o’clock. Padishah Padishah, one of the best all-round horses to race in New Zealand for a long time, is to be retired from flat racing. His owner, Mr J. A. Hennah. made this decision after the Auckland meeting last week, and Padishah will be returned to Hawke’s Bay to prepare for a hurdling programme in the winter. Saddled Six At the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting a feature was the success of the Awapuni trainer L. G. Morris. He won two races on the first day and four on the second. Mr T. A. Duncan was the winning owner in both races the first day, and he owned three of those who won on the second day. G. R. Tattersall, who is riding very well at present, rode all the winners for Morris. The Double

Pressure is being brought to bear in Australia to have the Australian Jockey Club install a double totalisator at Randwick. The latest argument is that three people who “ struck ” the daily double at Windsor in November received £912 12s each for 10s. The first leg of the double won at 10 to 1 and the second leg at 20 to 1. Winners in India

Private advice has been received in Auckland that the New Zealand horses Martara and Gay Talkie were recently successful in India. Martqra won an important race over one mile and a-half at Calcutta, and was second at even weights in the Viceroy’s Cup to Finalist, who is regarded as champion of India, Finalist had previously won the King Emperor’s Cup in Imin 38 3-ssec, carrying 9.3, Gay Talkie won theSandown Plate, worth 7000 rupees. It is run over a mile and a-quarter. Gay Talkie won in 2min Bsec.

The Wellington Cup ■ The nominations for the Wellington Cup total 25, and may not be considered numerically strong, but what is lacking in quantity stands more than balanced by quality. It would be the great star feature of the season if Royal Chief, Defaulter Catalogue, Arctic King, Wild Chase and half a dozen more of the best of the others engaged reached he post. Just the cream of the present strength of the field would provide a great race, and this would amount to about half the nominations. The field for the Telegraph Handicap is not so strong as anticipated, but here again quality is well represented. The Douro Cup has, as usual, attracted a big field, and will no doubt be anything but an easy race to win.

A Notable Visitor The veteran Victorian trainer Mr Charles Wheeler, who is now living in retirement in Adelaide, still takes a keen interest in racing affairs, and annually visits the New Zealand sales to select yearlings, brood mares, etc., for old clients. Last year, when he showed a partiality for Son-in-Law blood, he secured two very good sons of Siegfried. One of these, a colt now known as Wilson, he paid 1050 guineas for. Raced in Melbourne by another veteran in Mr John Wren, Wilson has won recently in such convincing form that he is now spoken of as a likely Derby candidate. He was a most impressive yearling Siegift, the other Siegfried colt purchased by Mr Wheeler, has proved himself outstanding amongst the youngsters racing in South Australia. Two years ago this visitor also secured Snowland. the dam of the New Zealand Cup winner Arctic King. After rearing a colt foal by Croupier, this mare has since died. Mr Wheeler, who himself trained two winners of the Melbourne* Cup, arrived last week from Adelaide to attend the Elderslie and national sales

Early Arrivals The first drafts of yearlings coming up for disposal at the national sales on Wednesday, January 18, are already reaching Trentham. The largest and probably the most important collection of youngsters yet bred in the famous Koatanui Stud by Mr G. M. Currie arrived last week. There are seven colts and seven fillies, all of which are by the young sires Ringmaster, by Colorado, and Posterity, by Son-in-Law. For quality and evenness, these yearlings are perhaps the finest collection that have yet been bred in this wonderfully successful stud. The Ringmaster colts include a brother to Master Hotspur and a half-brother to Elanage, a half-brother to Spiral and a close relative to Lynch Law. a halfbrother to the Derby winners Agrion and Waikare a half-brother- to Royal Order, Limulet and Linklet and a close relative to Smoke Screen, and a half-brother to Retrieved. The fillies by Ringmaster include a sister in blood to Master Hotspur, the first winner by the imported sire, his dam being Damaris, by Limond from Pennon, a half-sister to Royal Abb, a half-sister to Sir John and Farmer, and a half-sister to Varimond. As anticipated, Ringmaster is throwing horses of beautiful quality. He is by that outstanding son of Phalaris in Colorado who had phenomenal success at the stud in England, while his dam. Vervelle, is by Buchan, one of the most famous sires of brood mares in recent history. The Koatanui yearlings are splendidly grown, and will be paraded at the sale in wonderful bloom.

Business and Pleasure The successful Sydney trainers J. T. Jamieson, George Price, J. W. Cook, and Dan Lewis, who are on their way to attend the national sales at Trentham, all enjoyed successes over the Iwlidays. Jamieson won the December Stakes with Esperanto, a son of Lo Zingari and the New Zealand mare formerly raced by Jamieson. Polyxena, by Chief Ruler. He also won the December Nursery Handicap with another two-year-old in Beau Mari, a Beau Pere colt bred and owned by Mr VV. S. Glenn, of Wanganui, whose dam, Betroth, by Grand Knight, was disposed of at the national sales la&t January. George Price also won a two-year-old race for Mr W. Higgins with another Beau Pere colt in Bel Oiseau The latter was bred by Mr Higgins, and is out of his imported mare Joy Bird, by Argosy. Joy Bird at the present time is on a visit lo Beau Pere at the St. Aubin's Stud, New South Wales, She recently produced a colt foal to Siegfried. The winner of the A.J.C. Summer Cup, Red Sails, a son of Pantheon, who is one of the best staying sires in Australia, was trained by Joe Cook, who visited the New Zealand sales some years ago. Cook had the distinction of selecting Red Sails for his owner, Mr Carr, as a yearling. securing him for SOOgns. Danny Lewis, who, like Jamieson and Price, is an ex-New Zealander, has made a I great reputation in Australia as the

TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES January 14.—Cambridge T.C. January 14.—Timaru T.C. January 26, 28.—Forbury Park T.C. January 28. February I.—Nelson T.C. Reminder Nominations for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close to-morrow at 5 p.m. Horsepower If Horsepower strikes his best form at the Timaru meeting he should go close to winning one of the stakes. Due for a Win Fremont is due for another win at any time. He is engaged at Timaru A Vincent Prospect April Direct, who is engaged at the Vincent meeting, finished second to Aspirant in the Trial Handicap at Gore, and on that form looks like being prominent at the Central fixture.

Omitted from Handicaps Cirrus, 24yds bhd, was omitted from the handicaps for the New Year Trot Handicap at the Vincent meeting. Lucky Jack It is stated that Lucky Jack may be sent after the grass track record during the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting. The Timaru track can, under favourable conditions, become fast at this time of the year. “A Free-for-Fun ”

The Free-for-All to be staged by the New Brighton Trotting Club will be worth £2OO to the winner, and it will cost an owner £4 10s in nomination and acceptances to send a horse to the post. Apparently the club is seeking a star attraction at a minimum cost to itself and a maximum cost to the owner. Still, it is an effort in the right direction to cater for the best horses if the stake consideration is sufficiently tempting. Some may consider it a Free-for-All for fun so far as owner are concerned.

Lawn Derby Lawn Derby has been shipped back to Sydney. During his stay in New Zealand he won imperishable fame as the first horse in the world outside America to step inside 2min and go Imin 59 2-ssec. This was achieved on a six-furlong track and when hitched to a long-shaft sulky. Americans have expressed surprise that in Australia and New Zealand horses are raced in long-shafters. The conditions under which Lawn Derby accomplished his record mark a performance that will create interest and admiration in the United States, particularly so, because he acts without the straps. Lawn Derby also created a grass-track record of 2min 3sec and shared the honours with Van Derby In putting up 2min 1 l-ssec at Epsom. It is considered that under the conditions that exist in the United States Lawn Derby would go close to Imin 57sec, or at least better than Imin 58sec. A comparison between the times recorded at Epsom and Addington suggests that the grass track in the north is about two seconds slower than the Addington track, so that Van Derby must also be in, or right on the fringe' of, better than 2min class. That, however, is by the way. Lawn Derby is the sole occupant of the scroll of fame recording better than a 2min speed, and those who had the pleasure of seeing him put up his remarkable performances will have food for sporting conversation for the rest of their lives Interesting Importations

trainer of stayers. He has prepared no fewer than four winners of the Sydney Cup. two miles, His latest winner was the three-year-old filly Bonnie L.. by Dunottar, a Tracery horse, with which on his own nomination he won the Wilton Park Handicap, of seven furlongs. Bonnie L. is a descendant of Carbine, and is expected to stay well when fully matured.

Much interest will be taken in Widow Volo’s first foal. She is the first American mare bred to New land time. This makes her progeny eligible for classic events in New Zealand on the same terms as Do-minion-bred horses. Widow Voio has a record of 2min 61sec, and is by the champion sire Peter Volo, 2min 2sec, from Widow Grattan, 2min. Widow Volo was purchased by Mr J, R. McKenzie during his recent visit to the United States of America, and he had her sent to Village Farm to be mated with Abbedale, the leading pacing sire in the world. Widow •Volo was stinted to New Zealand time, and, according to a rat test which has been discovered to be an almost certain way of ascertaining if mares are in foal, is in foal as from September 17 last. Widow Volo is in quarantine at Wellington. She is a good type of pacer, and such a combination of the world’s leading blood strains should culminate in Mr McKenzie breeding a 2min pacer at Roydon Lodge. Widow Volo is the eighth American purchase made by Mr McKenzie last spring. The three yearlings which were bred at Walnut Hall and bought by Mr McKenzie at the sale in New York in November have arrived at Roydon Lodge. They are excellent specimens of the richly-bred American trotters, and should be a great acquisition to the sport in this country. One of them, Spangled Maiden, a sister to the world’s fastest three-year-old pacer, Chief Counsel, Imin 58£sec, is the highest-priced yearling sold in America. She is by Volomite (a son of Peter Volo) from Margaret Spangle, 2min 2Jsec. by Guy Axworthy—Maggie Winder 2min 6Jsec Spangled Maiden cost 5500 dollars. The colt, Light Brigade by Volomite —Spinster, 2min ssec. by Spencer. Imm is a handsome colt: and a filly by Volomite from Lema Moko, by Moko —Palema, by Bingen—Nancy Hanks, 2min 4sec, also has the makings of an outstanding performer. They are at present being broken in and gaited, and put through the elementary stages of their education LOGAN DERBY RETURNING TO RACE AT FORBURY PARK iSpecial io Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 7. The Wairio Jockey Club has received advice from Mr H. Barnes, owner of Logan Derby, that the Australian pacer will be returning to New Zealand next week. Before competing at the summer meeting of the Forbury Park Club, his owner intends to take Logan Derby to the Wairio Jockey Club’s meeting on January 21 when he will attempt to better his own Southland mile grass track record of 2mm 8 4-ssec. The conditions when Logan Derby put up these figures were far from favourable, and on a fast track it is confidently felt that he will better them if produced in the same form. Mr Barnes was greatly appreciative of the hospitality given him when he visited Wairio last month. College Boy, whose time ot 4mm 29sec for two miles, when he won the Roslyn Harness Trot at the Southland meeting, is one of the oldest pacers racing in New Zealand He was foaled in 1923—16 years ago—and his figures in his success on Wednesday are by far the best he has yet recorded. For one of his age and his racing experience, College Boy is still assessed on a very loose mark. Last year he won two saddle races, one from 60 yards behind over one mile and a-quarler, and the other from 108 yards behind over one mile and a-half. Some seasons back he took a mile and a-half record of 3min 22sec. but he was raced a good amount afterwards without repeating that form. By the manner in which he won at the Southland meeting College Boy appears capable of winning again, as not only did he better the track record by several seconds, but his time was faster than recorded in either the Gore or Winton Cups.

TROTTING AT TIMARU HANDICAPS DECLARED (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 8. The following handicaps have been declared for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday:—

RICCARTON NOTES TEAM FOR TRENTHAM (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 7. The Riccarton tracks, which have been quiet for a few weeks, are gradually livening up. The Auckland contingent arrived home to-day. and when those racing at Reefton come back, early next week, the local stables will be fully equipped again. Some of the horses are resting, but most of them will be in work very soon. Trentham will attract about thirty this month, after which Riccarton and Wingatiu will provide reasons for horses to be in strong work. Royal Chief reeled oil a gopci mile this morning, and he will be in good order for the Wellington Cup if the Trentham trip is decided on. If he goes, the twii-year-old Moorsotis will accompany him. Lady Leigh was eased up when she came home from the Dunedin meeting She had been in work for a year, so she had earned a rest It is unlikely she will be raced again until Easter. Since the retirement of Great Star ,1 H. Prosser has not been much in evidence. He now has a couple of two-year-olds of his own breeding in regular work. One of them is a filly by Myosotis from Half-a-Brace, an imported Bachelor Double mare, the dam of Double Shot, and a colt by Shambles
