MACANDREW BAY REGATTA MARRED BY HEAVY SEAS A strong and gusty south-easterly wind and heavy seas completely marred the Macandrew Eay regatta yesterday, causing a considerable reduction in the number of starters in each event. In addition several capsizes robbed many of the races of all interest. Only one boat finished in the race for 14-footers, two capsizing and one withdrawing, the only starter in the Takapuna class capsized soon after the start of the race, and the only starter in the race for sailing dinghies, 13ft and under, did not complete the course. No boats came to the line in the all-comers' event, and only one launch started in the speed boat race. Entries were good, but in the five events for yachts and motor boats there was a total of only nine starters. Overhead conditions were good, however, and there was a good attendance of spectators, so that, although from the racing point of view the regatta could hardly be called a success, it proved to be a popular holiday fixture.. Four boats started in the X class race, but Evelyn capsized on the beat back from Rainbird's Bay, where there was a treacherous wind off the peninsula, and Eileen went over up near Challis's. Ripple withdrew when half the course had been completed, leaving. Otago's- Sanders Cup representative, Lynette, to finish the race by herself,. Athough she started from the scratch mark under the Mark Foy system of handicapping, Lynette soon opened up a big lead, and with the other, three yachts out of the race C. Pettit took no chances and came home well reefed down. Oakie started in the Takapuna. class race, but capsized off Company Bay and Vagabond, the only starter in the race for dinghies, 13ft and under, struck trouble arid withdrew.' Sadie K. went round the course on her own in the event for. speed boats, but in the other launch race there were four starters. Two had engine trouble, leaving Waitiri and Marewa, which finished in that order, out on their own. The model yacht races were not held, but some swimming and diving events, conducted by the Otago Centre, races for Sea Scouts' crews, and an aquaplaning demonstration, added interest to the regatta. The results were as follows: X Class Sailing Dinghies First prize, £2 and Aulsebrook Cup: second, B trophy, valued £l.
