SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA Fire Brigade Social The Balclutha Fire Brigade held a social on Friday night as a farewell to Fireman N. Briscoe, who will shortly leave for Dunedin. Superintendent McCutcheon presided over a good attendance, including a number of honoiary members. Fireman Briscoe was presented with a suit case as a mark of esteem, and regret was expressed at his departure. Reference was also made to the approaching departure for Gore of the secretary, Mr J. C. Morris. Opportunity was taken to present the trophies won at the local competition, and also the Watts Cup, won at the recent competition held among South Otago brigades at Tapanui.

Sale of Bash Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., delivered his reserved judgment this week in the case of J. T. Walter, solicitor, Balclutha, as executor in the estate of the late Alex. McLean, of Chaslands, farmer, v. Sutherland and Co., sawmillers, Maclennan, in the claim £66 for timber cut on the property of the deceased. After reviewing the evidence, the magistrate held that the defendant's evidence had not satisfied him that the agreement was intended to cover the whole of the timber on the slope. Judgment would be for plaintiff for £66, with court costs (£2 10s), witnesses' expenses (£lO 3s). and solicitor's fee (£4 6s). Mr R. R. Grigor appeared for the plaintiff.

Milk Vendors' Combine The three Balclutha milk vendors have decided to amalgamate their interests, and, from the beginning of the New Year, townspeople will be supplied with milk either pasteurised or unpasteunsed as desired.

Successful Tenderers Messrs Wallace and Wallace, of Dunedin, were the successful tenderers for extensive alterations to the local Britannia Theatre, which will have the effect of considerably increasing the seating accommodation. The contractors expect to commence work after the holidays.

Experiences Abroad Miss Jessie Johnston, of North Balclutha, has returned after a six months' tour of Great Britain and the Continent. She had many interesting experiences. She was in London during the September crisis, when feverish preparations were in progress to resist expected aerial attacks, and the city population was partially evacuated. As were thousands of others, Miss Johnston was fitted with a gas mask of the latest type, which now forms an interesting souvenir of an eventful time.

Swimming Events Last week's competition at the Balclutha baths resulted as follows:—50 Yards Freestyle: W. Stewart (13sec), 1; S. Hamblett (14sec), 2. 100 Yards Freestyle: C. James (21sec), 1; V. Stephens (23sec), 2. 33 1-3 Yards Junior Freestyle: Miss E. Gold (lOsec), 1; D. Corbett (7sec), 2. MILTON Personal Mr J. Robinson, works foreman for the Milton Borough Council, accompanied by his wife and son, is at present on annual leave and left last week for Auckland. Mr Alex. D. Woodhead, formerly on the staff of the National Bank of New Zealand at Milton and now stationed at Paparoa, North Auckland district, is at present spending his annual holiday with his brother, Mr G. G. Woodhead, of " Glenkelrie," Tokoiti. Mr and Mrs Fred. Bastings, of Temuka, are the guests of Mr and Mrs Falconer, Tokoiti, for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Mr Bastings is the eldest son of Mr Fred. Bastings, former proprietor of the White Horse Hotel, Milton. Mr and Mrs J. M. Gordon and family, of Ethelton, North Canterbury, are visiting Milton for the holidays. They are the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Wilkinson, Union street. Nearly a Tragedy A narrow escape from serious injury was experienced by a small boy, aged about three years, at Tokoiti on Saturday morning when he stepped out from the front of a stationary motor car into the path of an approaching car. He was knocked down, but he crawled out from between the front and rear wheels of the vehicle, suffering from nothing more than a slight bruise on the forehead and a gravel rash on the side of the head. His escape was due to the fact that the car which knocked him down was an old model, high axled car, and he was not dragged along.
