BRITISH BY-ELECTION
THE KINROSS CONTEST DUCHESS OF ATHOL BEATEN LONDON, Dec. 22. The Kinross by-election resulted: Mr W. McNair Snadden (Con.) 11,808 The Duchess of Athol (Ind) 10,495 The Duchess of Athol, who held this seat as a Unionist member for 15 . years, sought re-election as an Independent. The voting at the general election was as follows: Viscountess Astor (Con.) 21,491, G. Ward (Lab.) 15,394. ROADS SNOWBOUND MANY UNABLE TO VOTE (Independent Cable Service) LONDON, Dec. 22. Sixty-seven per cent, of the electorate voted. Many were unable to poll owing to the snowbound roads. Mr Snadden said the result represented a vote of confidence in Mr Chamberlain. The Duchess of Atholl said: "I still think the Government's foreign policy is leading us into grave danger. I think there will be a general election before long, at which I expect to stand again." The total votes cast for the Government candidates in eight byelections since Munich were 196,686, compared with 176,796 for the Opposition. There have been 58 by-elections since November of 1935, of which 10 were lost by the Government to Labour and three to Independents.
