ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS

Questions will not be answered unless accompanied by the name and address of correspondents.

M. R. L. S., Tapanui— The specimen was referred to Dr Andrew, director of the School of Mines, Otago University, and he has kindly replied as follows:—The mineral lodged in stone is iron pyrites (sulphide of iron), oxidised on ihe surface to iron oxide. The association and occurrence are not unusual, but the size of the cubic crystals is greater than is customary in such a case. No cash importance is attached to the specimen. If in great bulk, iron pyrites would be worth from £ls to £2O per ton, depending on locality and other factors.
