HOLIDAY RACING

MONDAY'S FIELDS AT WINGATUI

SOVEREIGN LADY IN FAVOUR

TORO KOURA AMONG FAVOURITES

With'all the world at leisure from the humdrum affairs of ordinary life, just -following one day alter another, an.opportunity to participate in a break of possibilities Vbecbrnes welcome. Hence those of iportihg incliriatipn will welcome opportunity to enjoy a day's racing at Wingatui. This opportunity will be supplied-by a more'than ordinarily attractive card of good fields marking the opeping day of the Dunedin summer/ meeting.- The fields promise to furnish a most interesting- day's sport If good fields; of hurdlers,, two-year-olds and ..wellperformed handicap horses with recent form, to their credit can supply any criterion in that direction. All that is required to assist the potential success of a good card is favourable weather, to improve the going during the intervening time' before \the first race. Even at the . worst, sthe .racing cain be enjoyed with a minimum of discomfort because of" the extended area of sealed ground in the enclosures. Under anything like favourable weather conditions, the card should draw one of the best, if not the best, attendance ever seen at a Wingatui summer meeting. The racing will, as usual, carry a dual interest because the form displayed should throw light on the possibilities likely to occur at the New Year meetings which follow.

been seen of Vahnarch, but he looks well, and his only meritorious performance is a third to Cocksure and Second Innings at Geraldine. Wild Career has not appeared this season. Last year he won four times and gained a place five times in 20 starts. His best form was displayed over a mile and a-quarter. He won the Otautau Cup. the Riverton Cup,' and Awarua Handicap, and was third with 8.3 to Last Refrain 8.5 and Monipere 7.10. Moneyless can go fast, but not too far, but may improve. He can be granted only a remote chance. The Otago Handicap is comprised of a rather interesting field, with the principal danger to those able to stay coming from Alma with the lenient weight of .8.3. Sovereign Lady on a firm track would be in strong demand. At the New Zealand Cup meeting Sovereign Lady 8.7 won the Riccarton Handicap- in lmin . 52 3-ssec. when Nightwings 7.12 was unplaced. In the Otago Handicap, Sovereign Lady meets Nightwings on 181 b worse terms. Sovereign Lady 8.4 was third to Wild Chase 8.8 in the Fendalton Handicap, with Valantua 7.8 unplaced, in 2min 4 4-ssec. In the Otago Handicap, Sovereign Lady meets Valantua on 51b worse terms. In . the Metropolitan, Sovereign Lady 8.2 was a good second to Padishah 8.8. beat half a length in a good field including The Buzzer 8.11. Willie Win 9.0, and others including Milford 8.5. On form. Sovereign Lady should beat Milford. Queen of Song shaped well at the Grand National with every indication of being well worthy of taking to Australia, where she, however, did not shape up to expectations.. but is only a.seven-year-old mare, and. may recover something like her best form. Alma has generally been considered as racing beyond her distance when sent over a mile and a-quarter. Her latest effort in that direction was at Invercargill. where she finished third to Ardchoille 7.0 and Mona's Song 7.0, with- 8.6, and should beat them both at the weights in the Otago Handicap. Cape Gabo at his best would be dangerous, but Nightwings. who stays on well at the end of a race, maybe the best of the light-weights. The best Ilythia has done this season Is a third at the Ashburton November meeting to Elmarch 7.13 and Marpha. 7.12, with 9.0 in lmin 27 3-ssec, with heads between them. Ilythia won twice last season, including once over seven furlongs with 8.0 in lmin 27 2-ssec at the Kurow meeting. New Note's best form this season was a second over six furlongs at Gore to Gipsy Fair. Waitoru has not started this season. Last season, after five unplaced runs,' he was third to Straightdell and Sheeny in a Trial Handicap at Riverton and on the- second day was second with 8.4 to Ardmoyle 9.0 in the Novice Handicap. Waitoru won the Myross Handicap at -Invercargill with 7.7 from Foxlove 7.7 and Bad News 7.7, and at the Dunedin Winter meeting Was second to Second Innings in the St. Clair Handicap, when giving 51b to the winner. On the third day of the meeting Waitoru 8.11 was third over seven furlongs in the Domain Handicap to Second Innings 8.12 and Drinkup 8.3. In his only start this season Spanish Lad 8.1 ran Boswell 7.7 to a head at Invercargill over seven furlongs. Last season Spanish Lad 7.10 won the Trial Handicap' at the Dunedin Cup meeting in • lmin 28 2-ssec: He followed with a second at Gore to Mona's Song and a second to King Willow at Otautau. Peacock has not appeared this season. Last season, when in receipt of 141 b, he beat Ilythia over six furlongs at

The flelfl for the.Otbkia Hurdles is mostly composed of novice hurdlers, and hence there will be a tendency to lean towards those with experience. Last season McHeath won twice over hurdles, and also has some placed form to his credit.... Superex has been a disappointment, "but has latterly, been noticed running on at a finish after laying too far out to" hold a winning chance. If he could*be kept up with a field a win should come his way. Song Boy has been shaping well in his schooling with ..McHeath, and Toreador acts well in heavy going. Recollection's form on the'flat should make him the most dangerous one in the novice list of those engaged. He stays'well and is in Ihe same stable as Sir Rosenor. who would make a good' schooling master. Turaki, Who is top-weight in the Trial Handicap, finished secpnd to Half and Half in, the-Southland High-weight Handicap, and the'form ; w:lll brirt S §"s Into'favpur.; Remembo has pace; but his iiiily'form" this season "is a third to Gay Parade and Rebellion over six furlongs at Ashburton. Disband has a reputation which caused him to start favourite for the Strowan Plate. He got badly, away, and after racing up to the leaders in the straight,, faded out. ,;Atua Rere may prove the best of the unknown lot, as he shapes fairly well:ih, bis track .work. Arahui; is'the only one engaged. m the jDupedin Handicap with winning form; : '"At .Caulfield on November; 19 he won a division of a Maiden. TWo-year-old Handicap run over five furlongs. Aranui carried 7.10 and won in. lmin 01 sec. The second division was won in lmin OJsec by a horse carrying 83; Gold Salute has been seen outbid'five races, and finished in a place three times. In his first start he was'second to Master Hotspur in the JohnKGrigg Stakes, three lengths away :ih '47 3-ssec. Gold Salute was fourth in the McLean Stakes to Winning Rival, King Gustavo and Dark Flight, and fourth, in the Welcome Stakes to Winning Rival, Beau Livre and Nora Gregor. He was three lengths away third with 8.1 in the Nursery Handicap to Baran 7.3 and Daniel Defoe 8.12 ill 59 4-ssec\ and third with 8.2 to Baranlß;s and Great Swoop 8.3 in the Pioneer Handicap,, oveta. length. away in lmin 0 2-ssec. The unplaced lot "included King Gustavo 7.11 and Moneymore 7.9 J. Brandon has started three times, and in his first engagement, was five lengths away third behind Master Hotspur and Gold Salute in the John Grigg Stakes. Janefield has two unplaced performances, Prudent Prince has four unplaced starts, Mondello three .start* and - Blissful Lady four starts without gaining a place. Top Row was seen out twice in the early part of the season prior to being taken to Australia. With 9.3 Rebel Mate beat him 9.7 J by two lengths in,-the Paparua Handicap in lmin 13 l-ssec. In the Selwyn Handicap Top Row 9.3 was third to;:<Mittic 8.13 and

Timaru and he also won at Waikouaiti with 8.0 in lmin 15sec from Irish Birdcatcher 8.1 and five others. Adina won over six furlongs at the Kurow meeting. Chirp was third at the Dunedin spring meeting to Withdrawal and won a Trial Stakes at Banks Peninsula. Astral Flash was third to Boswell and Spanish Lad at Invercargill, and now meets the last-named on 41b better terms. Gusto, won at Gore when Astral Flash, giving 31b, was unplaced. Sunny Jean has not started since the spring of last season, when she finished a moderate third to Great Memory and Valmarch in the Novice Handicap run at Wingatui. - The field for the Burnside Handicap includes Cape Gabo, Valantua and Thermidbr, who are also engaged in other races. Valantua is being worked as if meant for business in the Otago Handicap. Travenna is said to be a doubtful starter, and consequently the field at the post may show a shrinkage from present strength. It will still remain a fairly open race, with Cocksure, Second Innings, Norseman, Swordstick, Foxlove and Nightdress going to the post. Norseman seems to get into all the trouble that happens along in a race, but those who do not like his. appearance should not allow a light-conditioned frame stopping a bet in his favour Nightdress stays on well and reads one of the picks of the handicap. Toro Koura, Passaform and Astral Flash may be most in demand for the Salisbury Handicap, but it is a field on which opinion may materially change as a result of what may be finally found at the post. The following may be amongst those most in demand for their engagements: — ' • Otokia Hurdles.—McHeath. Recollection, Superex. Trial Handicap.—Turaki, Disband, Atua Rere. Dunedin Handicap.—Aranui, Gold Salute, Knight Pal. Federal Handicap.—Lady Leigh, Janet Gaynor. Rodeur; . Otago Handicap.—Sovereign Lady. ■ Niehtwings Valantua. Milburn Handicap. Withdrawal. Spanish Lad Waitoru. Burnside . Handicap. Cocksure, Norseman, Nightdress or Foxlove. Salisbury Handicap.—Toro Koura, Passaform, Thermidor.

Grey Honour 8.8 over seven furlongs in lmin 30 l-ssec. Araboa's best form this season was when he won the August Handicap with 8.13 in lmin 31 3-ssec from Land Raid 8.4 and Mittie 8.12, with Ponty 9.4 next. Araboa meets Ponty on 81b worse terms at Wingatui. The unplaced lot included Valmarch 8.10 and Moneyless 8.2. In three starts this season Rodeur has been a winner and twice in third place. With 8.4 she was third to Norseman 7.8. and Viking 8.2 at Gore, and on the second day with 8.6 was third to Ballad 7.6 and Valantua 8.5 when Araboa 9.1 and Moneyless 7.11 were unplaced. Rodeur 9.0 won at Invercargill from Sailing Lady 7.12 and Dissemble 7.5. Janet Gaynor has been unplaced in seven starts this season. She scored her last win at Winton when carrying 8.10 she beat Rodeur 8.2 a nose. She now meets Rodeur on 181 b better terms. Janet Gaynor's last placed performance was in the Templeton Handicap, when she carried 7.9 and was a close third. to Rebel Mate 7.11 and Haughty Winner 7.4. A return to form would give Janet Gaynor a good chance at the weights. Not much has

Florence Mills Florence Mills will give the opposition some trouble at Manawatu, and so will another light-weight in Haughty Winner. Majority Majority, who is engaged at Manawatu, ranks as one of the best in training up to a middle distance, and perhaps more'. Mounts , A. Messervy will have the mount on Ponty, Cocksure, and Miss Bluff, and R. J. Mackie on Disband, Toro Koura and Elrnarch at Wingatui. Counterblast Counterblast must be granted a good chance at Manawatu. Florence Mills was handicapped to give her 31b at Trenlham, and.consequently reads well at 141 b better terms.

Beau Livre If Beau Livre has trained on and races up to the good impression he created when seen at Trentham and Riccarton, he will take some beating in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Valantua Valantua has been subjected to a solid preparation for the Otago Handicap, and will not fail through lack of the necessary condition to help him to the end of the journey. Petersham When Valantua won the Spring Handicap at Gore he beat Petersham by half a length in 2min Bsec. In the Otago Handicap Petersham meets Valantua on 71b better . terms, and should beat him at the weights.

Last Refrain It is reported that Last Refrain had the misfortune to injure a leg a few days ago, which accounts for the absence of this South Canterbury gelding from the acceptances for southern meetings. . A Full Book T. R. George has a horse in every race at Awapuni. They are Drachma, Daregain and Floral Robe (Maiden), Lustral (High-weight), Hinerawe (Tararua), Peerless and Galteemore (Cup), Beau Vite (Nursery). Trebor (Gillies), Dungarvan (Fitzherbert), and Roaming (Grand Stand). Fils dc Vaals The two-year-old colt Fils de Vaals was galloping over everything at the conclusion of the first division of the Waipa Plate, and it will be interesting to see how he shapes against others of his age in the Nursery Handicap at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Golden Shield Although she has several unplaced performances this season. Golden Shield is fancied in some quarters for the Railway Handicap. Last season she won twice and was placed three times in 14 starts. A Good Sign The best advertisement for a sire Is his stock, and the attractiveness displayed by the first crop of foals got by Man's Pal has resulted in a strong demand for his service. A Recruit Mrs E. L. Barnes, of Palmerston North, who is a sister of Mrs A. Jamieson, owner of the Melbourne Cup winner Catalogue, has also entered the ranks of owners, having, purchased a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Lord Quex from Maid of the West. The new purchase is thus a halfbrother to Play On, who has been showing impressive form of late At Wingatui The weather conditions wore anything but favourable for training operations at Wingatui yesterday, as heavy showers fell throughout the morning. The work took place on the; sand track, but was principally restricted to half-pace work, with occasionally an increase of pace up the straight. Ponty, Cocksure and Miss Bluff appeared and were allotted useful tasks, and each of them appears to be in good racing shape. Several

horses usually worked at Wingatui did not appear, and were exercised on the roads. Beaupartir Beaupartir was not as forward in condition when he met Defaulter at Riccarton. but nevertheless made quite a good show with him in the New Zealand Derby. If Beaupartir has trained on it need not create surprise if he keeps Defaulter busy at Auckland. Dungarvan , Dungarvan is displaying indications of coming back to form. He had a long spell, and hence would require considerable time to get him back to racing shape.

A Good Three-year-old Just what a high-class three-year-old can do was displayed by Cruciform winning the Railway Handicap with 9.0 in lmin 16 l-ssec (close to the then record for the race), the Middle Park Plate with 9.7, and the Great Easter with 9.9. Disdain has 7.4 in the Railway Handicap, and it should take a champion to beat her if she can act on a right-hand track. As a two-year-old, Disdain 8.10 cantered home in the Autumn Nursery Handicap in lmin 14sec, and in the Templeton Handicap Rebel Mate 7.11 was all out to win in lmin 13sec. Disdain put up a comparatively better performance than Rebel Mate. Tongue Straps The trainers at Riccarton have recently been asked to sign a petition to the Racing Conference praying that the ban on the use of tongue straps be removed. The opinions expressed in writing on the petition suggest that no valid reason for prohibiting the straps can be advanced; but on the other hand it has been claimed by some that their use in races would not be dangerous or detrimental to a horse's welfare. These straps are used on a horse who has developed the unfortunate habit of getting his tongue over the bit when racing, and once this occurs, it is almost impossible to control him or pull him up. a process that causes them much suffering, certainly considerably more than that entailed by the use of the preventive gear. Starting Methods Discussed "In an interview after his return to New Zealand with the Metropolitan winner, Royal Chief, trainer F. D.Jones expressed the opinion that the starting on Sydney courses is better than in Melbourne," says the Sydney Referee. He did not advance reasons, but his opinion cannot be passed over lightly by those people who are always clamouring for a different method of starting in Sydney. "These people, incidentally, are rather wide of the mark when they instance the satisfaction that walk-up starts give in Melbourne. If ever they go to Melbourne they will change their tune, for walk-up starts there are the exception, and not the rule. Only occasionally are they attempted. As a rule the horses are lined up at the barrier, and off they go. But there is this difference between the States, and probably Jones was referring to it when he made his statement. Many Melbourne races are marred by straggling starts, and. as one well-known man remarked after his return from the Victorian spring carnival. 'lt doesn't seem to matter

whether all the horses are in line;,near enough appears to ~be good enough.' He was sneaking broadly, of course. But, While Australian: Jockey , Club starter. Mr J. Gaxieu, has his critics, his percentage of indifferent starts is low. At times he has appeared overlenient in the matter, of riders persistently trying to anticipate the start, and of others who apparently take no heed of the draw for positions, but a series of punishments for disobedience is cramping thestyle of offenders. Mr Gaxieu's patience with unrulv horses, even aftev they have been sent to the outside, however, has sometimes been at the expense of well-backed and well-behaved runners, and this is still a sore point with some owners, trainers and backers." Tempest Tempest, who has a record of 2min 7isec in New Zealand, opened his winning account when he took the Collie Handicap (scr mark 2.16) at the Gloucester Park meeting on December 3. He arrived in Western Australia a few months ago, and during the interval has had six unsuccessful starts. He is owned by Mr J. R. Hallam, who has laid out a lot of money in New Zealandbred horses. Most of them (says the Trotting Record) have been good performers in their own country and reached marks at which it was difficult to win. With the elastic system of handicapping in this State they have an opportunity of winning races and recouping the cost of bringing them to Perth. In addition to Tempest. Mr Hallam started another New Zealander in Rollo. Both horses were at

10 to 1 in early betting, but Tempest firmed to 7's before the start. He was driven by the owner's son, J. Hallam. who had previously driven only one winner. Approaching the home turn Tempest was not well placed, but he unwound a fast run and reached the winning post four -yards in advance of another New Zealander in Homeward (10 to 1). with Prince Loloma HO to 1) in third place. The favourite was Nelson Pronto at 3 to 1. but he mixed his gait and finished nearly last The former Victorian. Gentle Bobbie came in for supporl at s's and 4's, but faded out over the final stages after attending to the pace-making Last season's W.A. Trotting Cup winner Kolect, also came in for support at s's and 4's, but never actually looked a winner, although running on at the end.

HOKITIKA RACES STRONG CANTERBURY TEAM (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH. Dec. 23. Riccarton stables hold a strong hand for the Westland Racing Club's oneday meeting, which will open the West Coast circuit next Wednesday Horses from here are in the majority in each race, and the class is better than usual. Another big advantage comes from the fact that the West Coast horses have not raced for some time, while most of the Riccarton brigade are well seasoned.

The field for the Westland Handicap includes few " proved horses over a mile arid a-quarter, and on this season's form the outstanding pair engaged are Roy Bun and Kilrobe. Roy Bun appeals as the likely winner here, as on her showings" so. far Kilrobe is essentially a sprinter. But .the turning track will suit her, arid, as she has a great burst of speed, there is always the. chance that she will see out A distance and have a dash left for the straight. : , . • • ■• Land Raid's form has not been good this season, and if the track remains heavy, as it is at present, his chance under 9.1 will not be a good one. Rebel Chief has shown good form on this track before, and has been a winner over' the distance. He has only had three races-this season, but has not shown the necessary improve-'

ment in form to suggest a winning chance here.

The Masquerador is of little use in heavy going, but on a reasonably firm track would have a chance if he were -allowed to bowl along and set his own pace. ; Emmeline Girl failed when last raced at Riccarton, while Maroha looks well placed later in the day. Bit o' Blue, which completes the field, does not seem to be able to go with his field early, and he cannot afford to give starts here.

Patiently handled, Tantivy should win the Maiden Stakes, as he has better form than the others. Queen : Linda is speedy and should get a place, while of the remainder Papernilla appeals most. Skyrena showed that she could run seven furlongs, the distance of the Kanieri Hack Handicap, when she won at Hurunui, and she looks like repeating the dose here. Great Memory may have her chance prejudiced through an inability to go with the field early, but she has run some solid races since being trained on the West Coast, and handles weight well. Glenacre is another which drifts early but finishes fast. Palmyra is likely to be reserved for later in the day. and as Real Lady has been shin sore the danger among the light-weights will be La Plata, provided she reproduces Hororata form Few. however, will want to go past Skyrena. Kilrobe is also engaged in the six furlongs Thompson Memorial and if started here in preference to the Westland Handicap it will not be necessary to look further for a likely winner. With Roy Bun and Kilrobe missing. Land Raid would have a chance, even witli 9.7. Gay Pai'ade is due and will appeal more than the remainder if the listed field starts in the principal race. Arrowrose looks the only other prospect. Maroha has disappointed many times when fit. but his big opportunity to make amends looks to be in the mile Rimu Hack Handicap. He has been working well, and with a strong rider should not get beaten. Glenogil will benefit from the race, but should be dangerous. Bit o' Blue must also be. considered.

Palmyra, with some weight off her back, should run a smart seven furlongs in the Stewards' High-weight Potent should b$ improved by his run at Hororata. but Metal Bird should offer most opposition to Palmyra. He has been improved by a few hurdle races and should now run on better.
