The Commissioners appointed to carry out the preliminaries to the election of the new authority, the Lower Clutha River Trust, are Messrs Peter Keller, engineer (Dunedin), Andrew A. Jensen, farmer (Stirling), and John Graham Weir, farmer (Stirling). Mr H. Hendrick, captain of the Union Football Club, .was entertained by members at a social evening, prior to his departure for Invercargill. On behalf of the members, the president (Mr V. McDonald) made a presentation to Mr Hendrick, and referred to his association with the club, of which he had been captain for three seasons and a member for about 15 years.

Mr R. A. Wilkinson will leave this morning for Wellington where he will connect with the Awatea en route for Sydney. Reference to the deaths of Mr A. A. Mac William, clerk of the Waihemo County,* and Mr John Logan, clerk of the Taieri County, was made at yesterday's meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council, and a motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in the usual manner. The Rev. L. J. Boulton Smith, minister of the Vivian Street Baptist Church. Wellington, has (states a Press Association telegram) accepted a call to the Oxford Terrace Church (Christchurch), which is one of the largest Baptist congregations in New Zealand.

A Press Association telegram from Wellington says that Cabinet selected Mr F. B. Dwyer, accountant of the Internal Affairs Department, to proceed to England to attend the Imperial Defence College for 12 months. He is the first civilian officer from New Zealand to be selected for the course. Mr Dwyer, with his wife and family, will leave Wellington on Monday for Auckland to connect with the steamer. A Wellington Press Association message states that Lieutenant-colonel Standisn, who 'will retire shortly from the position of officer commanding the Central Military Command, was met on Thursday by his brother officers of both the permanent and Territorial forces at a social, where good wishes were extended to him. About 80 persons were present. Advice has been received from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers that Messrs A. Crosbie, N. Davidson, G. H. Robinson, and A. D. Wilson have passed the studentship examination, and sectional passes were obtained in the associate membership class by Messrs N. Davidson, G. H. Robinson. A. D. Wilson, S. J. Maddocks, Thomson (A2), H. E- McLenaghlin (B), R. J. Henderson (C).

The general manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Ltd.. has been advised that Mr H. J. F. Mills (son of the late Sir James Mills) and Mr Thomas F. Tallents have been elected to the London board of the company, and have also been appointed joint general managers of the company in London as from January 1, 1939. Prior to his departure from Ranfurly. where he has been manager of the Bank of New South Wales. Mr M. Mirfin was met by the clients of the bank on his last visit to St. Bathans, and a presentation was tendered to him and Mrs Mirfin. Mr Neil Nicolson. who made the presentation, referred to the courtesy and consideration given by Mr Mirfin to all clients, including a large number of subsidised miners. Mr Wade, manager of the Kildare Hill Company, said that, although residents of the district were extremely sorry to lose Mr and Mrs Mirfin, they were elad It meant the promotion which Mr Mirfin richly deserved. Similar comments were made by Messrs Kenny and J. D. Enright, and Mr Mirfin suitably replied.

Before dispersing for the holidays the staff of the Otago Farmers' Union Mutual Fire Insurance Association and the Farm Accounting Association of New Zealand (Inc.) made a presentation of a chiming clock to Mr D. T. Martin, whose marriage will take place early in January. Making the presentation, the general manager, Mr A. C. Cameron, conveyed to Mr Martin the good wishes of the staff, and paid a tribute to the esteem in which he was held. His remarks were supported by one of the directors, MiArthur Craig.

North-bound passengers by Union Airways yesterday morning were Miss M. Youngson and Mr and Mrs A. W. McNicholl for Christchurch. Miss G. Smith and Mr C. Taylor for Nelson, Mr John 'Finnerty for Wellington, Mr E. Frassr for Palmerston North, and Messrs S. C. Sutherland, W. E. C. Reid and James Monro for Auckland. South-bound passengers by the afternoon plane were Messrs R. Morton and E. Harland from Palmerston North. Mr W. O'Brien from Gisborne. Mr W. H. Nelson from Nelson. Mr K. C. Love from Wellington, and Mr J. Walker from Christchurch.
