SAFETY IN COAL MINES
COMMISSION’S REPORT SAT FOR THREE YEARS (British Official .Wireless) RUGBY, Dec. 21. (Received Dec. 22, at 6.30 p.m.) The report of the Royal Commission on safety in coal mines, which sat for three years, emphasises that mining is the most dangerous of all major industries, with the average annual loss of life about 850, but the commission believes that with the necessary effort these terrible figures can be reduced. The commission stresses the need for a change of attitude in the mining industry itself —among owners, officials and workers alike—leading to a higher standard of professional conduct with regard to safety.
