MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Taien County Council was held yesterday, the following being present:—Crs W. K. Kirk (chairman), J. A. Gow, F. M. Howell, W. I. Nichol, J. A. Wither, C. Findlay, T. McMillan, and G. Stevenson. Correspondence The secretary of the Dunedin Jockey Club (Mr L. G. Hill) wrote asking that some finality be reached regarding the road from Sharp’s corner to the Wingatui racecourse.—The chairman and Cr Findlay were appointed to confer with officials of the Jockey Club. Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P., wrote asking on behalf of Mr D. Heflernan, Middlemarch, if the council could provide a travelling chair over the Taieri River to allow children to cross to school. It was decided to approach the Public Works Department regarding the purchase of a chair. The Brighton Domain Board’s request for some corrugated iron, which had been removed from the board’s harbour bridge, was refused. A petition, signed by eight residents of the district, requested that something should be done to the bridge over Duck Creek, which required widening and the erection of handrails—lt was decided to attend to the matter. The acting-secretary of the West Taieri Presbyterian Church wrote asking that a drain be provided to stop water from running from the road into the drive of the manse.—The member for the riding and the inspector were empowered to act in the matter Messrs Simpson and Warrington, solicitors, as trustees in the estate of ‘the late ?dary Ann Hudson, requested that means of access should be provided to a farm which the tenant was endeavouring to develop.—The member for the riding was asked to submit a report to the next meeting. The inspector of health, Dunedin, forwarded copies of lettei-s sent to owners of properties against whom complaints had been made regarding drains at East Taieri.—The inspector of works reported that the matters were being attended to. Mrs E. Mitchell, South Dunedin, wrote requesting the council to cut broom on Rudd's road leading to her properly. —It was decided to request the owner of the property to cut the broom, „ The Main Highways Board s representative (Mr P. Kellar) wrote stating that the headmaster of the Fairfield School had drawn his attention to the footpath in the vicinity of the school and asking if the council was prepared to contribute its share, half-cost to wards the work of repairs.—lt was decided to inform the Highways Board that the council considered that the work was one for the board. Treasury vouchers were received as follows:—Main highway. No. 6. £32 11s 6d; main highway reconstruction, £2823 17s 8d; main highway maintenance, £960 8s 6d.

Ranger’s Report The county ranger (Mr J. Williamson) reported that he had found 12 head of cattle wandering on roads during the month—Received. Physical Welfare In connection with the formation of district committees under the physical welfare and recreation scheme, the Mayor of the borough (Mr W. P. Hartstonge) and Mr A. J. Stewart, clerk of the Outram Town Board, waited on the council asking its cooperation with the .no bodies. It was decided to appoint two representatives to act on a committee, the convener of which would be the Mayor. Inspector’s Report The inspector of works (Mr John Garrett) submitted the following report:— East Taieri Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced' OwhiroGladfleld, Riccarton, and Riverside. The Riccarton and Cemetery and Centre roads have been graded. Ndrth Taieri Riding.—Owing to the rain last week the roads have been badly scoured in several places Slips have occun’ed on Rudd’s road, Flagstaff. The slip near the top oj the hill will require a deviation to enable traffic to pass. This will cost about £4O. Two chains of the present road has slipped away, and it has therefore been closed for all traffic. The North Taieri-Taioma road has been graded, and culverts will be put in as soon as possible. . Kaikorai Riding.—A 56ft 12-inch stone culvert has been washed out on the Golf Links road. This has been renewed with 18-inch concrete pipes. .Kaikorai Valley and Green Island Bush roads have been graded. Notice boards have been erected warning persons against tipping rubbish on Barr’s and Sidey’s roads. Otokia Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced: Allanton streets. Otokia-Kuri Bush, and Mclntosh’s. One hundred and forty-five yards of maintenance gravel from the Scrogg's Hill pit have been run out on Bedford parade to Lobb's gate, Brighton streets, and Mclntosh's roads, and 50ft of nineinch pipe culvert has been put in at Mrs KovaleskTs, at Allanton;- A culvert has been repaired "1 McMaster's. Saddle Hill. Outram Riding—The heavy rain scoured the Outram to Hindon road at Lee Stream, and 54 yards of maintenance gravel has been put in to repair it. Owing to the work of the Taieri River Trust with their dragline, the foundations of ihe bridge on Duck Creek at Moynihan's, on Dan. Millar’s road, have been impaired Beehive, Nichols, Bremncr’s, Huntly, and Allanton to Berwick roads have been graded. Maungatua Riding.—The surfacing of Kowhai Spur has been completed, and a washout has been repaired at the Broad Creel bridge, on the Lee Flat road. The Henley to Berwick. Lee Canal, Grainger's, and Spark’s roads have been graded. Deep Stream Riding.- -Mount John and John Graham’s xmads have been surfaced, and a 24ft nine-inch pipe culvert has been pul in on the Clark’s to Rock and Pillar road. Strath-Taieri Riding.—The Middlemarclx township streeL have been cleaned up for the holiday season. A ditch has been cleared on Pugh’s road and a washout repaired on Robertslee

road. The running out of the schist spalls on Mcßae’s road has been completed. MAIN HIGHWAYS No. 2 Highway.—The section from West Taieri Church to Middlemarch has been graded With the power gradei and 60 yards of schist spalls have neen spread on the section from Middlemarch to Waihemo boundary at the "W.” This road has also been surfaced. No. a Highway.—During the heavy rain Slips occurred at Valpy’s and Crawford’s. These sections will require to be faced with dry stone masonry Avails to prevent the adjoining property from slipping on to the road. A new sft footbridge has been erected alongside the traffic bridge at the boat harbour Brighton. This should re.deve the congestion of foot traffic at this bridge. The section from Brighton to Green Island has been graded, and 50 yards of maintenance gravel has been spread. No. 6 Highway.-y General surface work has been carried out. No. 7 highway Las been graded and 65 yard' of maintenarce gravel from Milner’s pit has been spread. Nq. 8 highway has been graded and general surface work has been carried out. The report was approved. Finance Accounts amounting to £2309 7s 8d were passed for payment.
