The Winton Trotting Club, The response from owners and breeders to the Winton Trotting Club s effort to infuse interest into breeding must be deemed highly satisfactory The Winton Juvenile Stakes of £250 has produced 16 three-year-olds after the final payment. The fight against the introduction of night trotting meetings in Victoria has led to an interesting state of affairs. A Night Trotting Bill, if carried into effect, would debar bookmakers from betting on any racecourse. The main intention of the Bill was to bar betting at night trotting meetings. While the Bill was in committee an amendment was moved to prohibit betting at night trotting meetings. There was a close division, as the amendment was carried by only one vote —15 to 14. The amendment, however, went much further than members suspected, as_ it was so worded that it made betting illegal on all racecourses by bookmakers, and unless the new clause of the Bill is amended bookmakers will not be able to operate on any Victorian racecourses. It was not until the following day that the full effects of the amendment were realised, and there was consternation among the members who had voted for it, as they had not the least intention of interfering with the existing conditions governing racecourse betting.
