NEW ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUN

The first published reference to a new and powerful anti-aircraft gun appeared recently in an official Government report of evidence taken before a Select Committee of the House of Commons studying estimates submitted by various departments. The calibre of the gun is given as 4.5 in. which would make it the most powerful antiaircraft gun in the world. The reference was buried amid a mass of evidence relating to the War Office’s system of sub-contra*ting orders, and was

confined to a statement by H. C. Gordon. director of army contracts, on pun mountings, According to the report, Mr Gordon said:—“ln the case of the 4.5 anti-aircraft gun mounting, we have eliminated sub-contracts. We

are making direct contracts foi the various parts and having them assembled by the parent firm.’’ All previous attention had been directed to the 3.7 in gun, which has a ceiling of 30,000 feet and. is capable of firing 12 shots a minute! although the Minister of War. Mr Leslie Hore-Belisha. predicted last June that the new 3.7 in gun would be “ reinforced again by other gradations of artillery.”
