UNEMPLOYED WORKERS
DUNEDIN BRANCH MEETS The monthly meeting of the Dunedin branch of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement was presided over by Mr Mark Silverstone. Correspondence was deall with from the Minister of Labour (Mr H, T, Armstrong), the Federation c" Labour, Wellington, the secretary of the N.U.W.M., Wellington, and other local organisations.
The organising report showed that 70 members had been granted clearances on receiving full-time work, and over 50 members had been placed in full-time work since the last meeting. The secretary aiso reported that he had been in touch with the Labour Bureau officials with regard to some complaints, satisfactory arrangements being made in all cases. An interesting report was received from the two delegates who attended the Trades Council meeting in connection with Federation of Labour matters, and thanks were tendered to them for their services.
It was agreed that the branch continue 'its affiliation wit* the Federation of Labour in Wellington, but on a reduced membership basis, as most members were now in other unions. Mr W. Cocking was elected delegate for the next year. A few complaints were left in the secretary’s hands for attention The president delivered an address on the financial position of New Zealand from 1932 to the present year, and received a hearty vote o; thanks. Closing the meeting, the chairman thanked the members of the executive for the work done on behalf of the unemployed, and wished all the members of the movement the compliments of the season. Mr Water.son, on behalf of the executive, suitably replied, and complimented the president for the work he had done in the interests of the unemployed and the workers generally.
