PATROL OF THE BEACHES

REGRETTABLE SHORTAGE OF FUNDS At a meeting of the Otago branch of the New Zealand Surf Life-saving Association Mr H. H. Henderson presided over a full attendance of delegates. Advice was received that the City Council had voted the sum of £35 for a patrolman on St. Clair beach for a period of eight weeks, and tha* the St. Kilda Council had voted the sum of £5 towards the cost of a patrolman on the St. Kilda beach. Appointments of patrolmen for both beaches were made, subject to a satisfactory test of ability. After a full discussion of ways and means, it was decided that as the amount available for a patrolman at St. Kilda beach could be subsidised to only a small extent from the association’s funds, it would only be possible to pay the wages of the patrolman for two weeks, and that unless further funds were forthcoming the St. Kilda beach would be without the services of a patrolman after that period.
