Mr A. H. Valentine left by the through express yesterday on a visit to Auckland. The promotion of Captain P. W. G. Spiers, M.8.E., M.C.. V.D., officer commanding the Otago Regimental Depot, to the rank of major has been gazetted. Dr G. Fenwick, of Auckland, and Mr D. Fenwick, of Wellington, arrived in Dunedin by air yesterday.

Mr J. Boyd Dunlop will leave by car to-night en route for Wanganui, where he will take part in the New Zealand chess championships.

Mr T. P. Fotheringham. inspector for the Union Bank of Australia in New Zealand, will relinquish the chairmanship of the Associated Banks in New Zealand on December 31. and will be succeeded by Mr R. C. Addison, resident inspector of the Bank of New South Wales, the oldest sitting member of the Banks Association.

It was announced yesterday (says a Press Association telegram from Wellington) that Mr H. E. Moston, C.8.E., Assistant Secretary of Labour, will succeed Mr J. S. Hunter as Secretary of Labour. Mr Hunter was recently appointed to an administrative position in the new Social Security Department.

For over 35 years, Cr Kirk said, Mr Logan had endeared himself to the citizens of the Taieri by his wonderful personality, geniality, and unfailing courtesy,’ while in his work he had shown untiring energy and absolute dependability.
