LODER CUP AWARD
HONOUR FOR MRS KNOX GILMER PRESERVATION OF NEW ZEALAND FLORA The Loder Cup, which was given by Mr Gerald Loder, afterwards Lord Wakehurst, of Sussex, England, "to encourage the protection and cultivation of the incomparable flora of the Dominion," has this year been awarded to Mrs Knox Gilmer, who was nominated by the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, the Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand, and the Wellington Horticultural Society., Mrs Knox Gilmer's work for the preservation of New Zealand forests is well known. The New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, whose activities
include native forest preservation, has found Mrs Gilmer a most energetic member of its executive council. On its recommendation Mrs Giimer was made an honorary ranger under the Scenery and Forest Preservation Act. As a member of the executive of the Forest Birds Protection Society of New Zealand, Mrs Gilmer has been active in assisting the society's good work in the preservation of native forest. As working patron of the Wellington Beautifying Society, the planting, cultivation and preservation of native plants has been advocated and encouraged at all times by Mrs Gilmer, and the results in Wellington city and surrounding districts have paid adequate tribute to her work.
Approximately 40,000 trees were planted during the recent season and as a member of the Horticultural Committee of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition committee Mrs Gilmer has interested herself in the planting of native trees and shrubs.
