RAILWAY HOUSING
THREE HUNDRED HOMES UNDER CONSTRUCTION FORTY IN OTAGO DISTRICT As part of a scheme for increasing much-needed housing accommodation for the working railways staff the department has under construction 300 houses throughout New Zealand. Of this total 40 are to be erected in various localities throughout the Otago district. Several have been completed, some by private enterprise and others by the department itself. This information was given to a Daily Times reporter yesterday by Mr G. H. Mackley, general manager of railways. Houses for the Otago district have been allotted as follows:—Herbert, 1; Maheno, 3; Otokia, 1; Sawyers' Bay, 2; Milburn, 1; Waihola, 1; Ranfurly, 4; Milton, 3; Waitati, 1; Bushey, 1; Palmerston, 4; Waipiata, 1; Seacliff, 2; Purakanui, 1; Ida Valley, 1; Craigellachie, 1; Miller's Flat, 2; Goodwood, 1; Port Chalmers, 2; Mosgiel, 1. These houses, Mr Mackley mentioned, would be occupied by men in the various branches of the service, including the traffic, maintenance, locomotive and signalling departments.
