SCHOOL VACATIONS

POPOTUNOA At the break-up ceremony on Saturday evening the Popotunoa School closed after 45 years' existence. The present teacher. Mr Woods, was thanked for the progress of the work in the school and for the great improvement of the school grounds'. The programme consisted of items presented by the children, and after the prizes were distributed an opportunity was taken to present Mr and Mrs Woods with a small token of the esteem in which they are held in the district. FLAG SWAMP On Friday night the annual break-up and prize-giving ceremony was held at the Flag Swamp School. Mr J. A. Payne, chairman of the School Committee, opening the proceedings, spoke of the good work done during the year by the teachers. Mr J. D. Brown and Miss D. Carson. The inspector's report on school work and discipline in the school reflected great credit on the teaching methods used. The school grade had been raised during the year, and Miss Carson's position was now a permanent one. The Rev. T. Wilson Potts also addressed the gathering. After an enjoyable programme had been given by the children the prizes were distributed. Those receiving special prizes were: —Diligence (girls): Dorothy Brown. Diligence (boys): Rob. Wardrop. Sewing (senior girls): Dorothy Brown and. Muriel Rawson. Sewing v (junior): Janses Preston. Attendance: Bruce Churchman (never absent , during seven years). ■
