WANAKA The Weather Last week the weather in Wanaka was varied, the first few days being cold with intermittent showers. Towards the end of the week sunshine prevailed, and the week-end was warm and sunny. The growth this season has been exceptional, owing to the wet weather, and haymaking and shearing have been held up until this last week-end. Earthquake Shock The earth tremor was felt In Wanaka on Saturday morning at 5.30, and a later shock, less severe, occurred at 11/.20 the same morning. The first shake was the most severe that has been known to occur at Wanaka. No damage was done, but the shock lasted for 30 seconds, and trees and telephone wires received a severe shaking. Lawn Tennis A lawn tennis match was played at Cromwell on Saturday between the Wanaka and Cromwell Clubs. The result was a win for Cromwell after some closely contested games, the score being 10 sets to 6. Personal

J i )hn Hunt has "turned from Wellington, accompanied bv Sir William and Lady Hunt. Mrs J. S. Sinclair and family, of Dunedin are guests at Maungawera for the Christmas holidays. Mr A. C. Hanlon and Mr J. S. Sinclair are enjoying a holiday at Lake Hawea fishing. Mrs F. M. Faulks, of Wanaka, will leave to-day for an extended holiday in the South Island. Miss Niven returned to Dunedin this week.

Mr and Mrs Stanley Botting and family, of Dunedin, are camping on their section for the Christmas holidays.

Dr and Mrs Douglas and family will leave this week for a holiday in Oamaru.

Dr John Fulton, of Dunedin, is taking a locum for Dr Douglas during his absence.

Mrs Robert Fulton, of Dunedin, is the guest of Mr and Mrs Terence Bridgeman.

Swimming Club A meeting of the Wanaka Amateur Swimming Club was held on December 13. Mr D. Dickson (president) was in the chair.

Correspondence was received from the New Zealand Swimming Association advising that a team of women swimmers would be touring New Zealand to give instruction in swimming. A letter was received from the Alexandra Amateur Swimming Club advising that a party of swimmers from Dunedin who had previously arranged to be present at the Alexandra and Wanaka carnivals would not be able to come, owing to lack of accommodation.

Arrangements were made for the removal of the dressing shed to a new site, and for renovations to the shed.

Mr Bridgeman gave particulars to the meeting of the results of the deputation which waited on the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) with a view to securing financial assistance for the swimming pool for the Wanaka Club and the arrangements for the "Keep Fit" Campaign.

ALEXANDRA < Christmas Choral Service; There was a large congregation at St. Enoch's Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening for the annual festival of Christmas'music. The choir, under the baton of Mr W. Bringans, choirmaster, rendered carols and appropriate anthems, and Miss Dorothy Ramsay sang the solo "Star of Bethlehem." Haigh, who has been Government meat inspector at the Gore Abat- ! toirs for the last five years, and who has been transferred to a similar position at Nelson, was honoured prior to his departure at a social evening organised by the Gore butchers. A presentation of a travelling rug was made by Mr J. J. Crawford, who made reference to the many improvements carried out at the abattoirs under the direction of Mr Haigh to facilitate the handling of stock and to bring the works more up to date. Several other speakers extended congratulations on having received promotion to Mr Haigh, who made suitable response. Angling The second competition organised by the Gore Angling Society in the series for the Roche Cup was held on the Pomahaka River in difficult conditions. The weather was fairly rough, with the result that only six of the 15 competitors weighed in. The competition was won by J. Hoffman, who secured 13 fish, which, with handicap, weighed 221 b 2oz. Schluter was in the chair. The secretary, Mr D. Guild, presented the annual balance sheet, showing a credit balance of £22. which was approved. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President Mr D. Guild; secretary. Mr J. Howell, jun.; committee—Mrs Schluter. Miss R. Guild and Messrs I. Schriffer, D. McKegg. M. Newman. T. Society The monthly meeting of the StrathTaieri Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held on December 14, the president (Mr E. Matheson) being in the chair. The schedule for the coming show on Easter Monday was revised, and an extra class for troop horse most suitable for mounted rifles was added to the light horse section. The Weather The weather is most unseasonable, and the man on the land is having a difficult time. Shearing is still being held up. and it is impossible to get on with hay making. Grain crops are very heavy, and the prospects for turnips were never better. The shortage of suitable farm labour is very acute in the district, and hundreds of acres of grass which ought to be cut for hay will have to be left. On 1.1 days so far this month 366 points of rain have fallen.
