RADIO TELEPHONY
NEW SERVICE OPENED AUSTRALIA TO AMERICA SYDNEY, Dec. 21. (Received Dec. 22, at 1.35 a.m.) The Minister of External Affairs, Mr W. M. Hughes, to-day inaugurated the first direct radio telephone service between Australia and the United States. Mr Hughes spoke with Mr F. B. Sayre, Assistant Secretary of State at Washington, and with the Australian High Commissioner, Mr Stanley Bruce, who is at present visiting America.
Sir Harry Brown, Australian Director of Postal Services, conversed with Mr F. McNigh, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission in Washington. The editors of various American newspapers also conducted conversations, discussing the weather and Christmas festivities.
