HIGH SCHOOL’S YEAR ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of the Christian Brothers’ High School states, inter alia:— Notwithstanding the outbreak of measles in the second term and the continuance of the epidemic in the third, the attendance was, on the whole, highly satisfactory. Indeed, a very large number of boys scored 100 per cent, in daily attendance. While commending them for this, and for their "philosophic” attitude towards the duties incidental to school life generally, we should like also to thank their parents who, almost without exception, co-operate very loyally with the teachers. This, however, is only to be expected from those who. for conscientious reasons, must support schools like ours unsupported by the State, and teachers who regard education not merely as a preparation for this life only, in the case of their pupils, nor merely as a means of livelihood or even as a profession, as regards themselves, but largely as “that most divine of all divine work—the co-operation with God in the salvation of souls."

In connection with this religious training in the school, we are pleased to be able to record very real progress. A group of senior pupils was formed for Catholic Action study under the leadership of Mr J. O’Dea, an ex-pupil. The senior prefect, G. Drumm, represented his group and his school at the successful function organised by the Rev. Father Bennet, In the New Year additional groups will be formed and further advance made on similar lines. During the year the boys, especially in the senior classes, manifested a keen interest in the Foreign Missions, and were most generous in their contributions. Over £3O was subscribed in this way by all the classes and for all the missions, while the proceeds from a concert increased this amount to £SO. The Rev. Father McMahon examined the whole school in Christian doctrine. The St. Joseph’s Cathedral Choir is now composed almost entirely of boys from the school. The senior students were very successful in last year’s examinations. One sat for the University Scholarship examination and obtained a bursary; one sought and obtained admission to the Teachers Training College’; 17 out of 22 succeeded in matriculating; 10 out of 12 passed in the Civil Service examination, and 22 out of 23 secured their intermediate certificate. Four students in Form VI obtained higher leaving certificates. As an inducement to our matriculated students to continue for at least one additional year in school, the Old Boys’ Association has given a scholarship, to be awarded after the publication of the results in January and to be known as “The Christian Brothers’ Old Boys’ Association Scholarship." With the same object in view, another scholarship, to be known as The Christian Brothers’ High School Scholarship,” will also be awarded. The work in the junior classes also proceeded steadily, there being no changes in the personnel of the staff either here or in the senior school. Ernest Holden was awarded a Mens. Coffey scholarship, and the following secured the Shiel-Mills scholarships:—D. Cadigan, V. Lovell, O. McManus, B. Pettit. Accordingly, in future years, at least eight scholarships will be available for competition among the Catholic boys of Dunedin, and tenable in the secondary department.

The two Scout troops are making satisfactory progress under Scoutmasters F. Miles and L. Lomas, and the 30 representatives who travelled to the Centenary Celebrations in Auckland under the control of Group Scout Master W. Stafford and his assistants deserve to be commended for their conduct and bearing both as Catholics and Scouts. In competition for the honour banner presented by the bishops they filled second place, while in local competitions during the year they won the shields for football and ambulance work. The two Cub packs under Misses Kerr and Duncan are making great headway. A reasonable amount of time and attention was bestowed on the physical development of the pupils. The efficiency of the cadets was, perhaps, never at a higher level than this year, although fewer parades than usual were held. In football and cricket our boys were runners-up in the Six Stone competition and the Fifth Grade respectively. We desire to congratulate two expupils. the Rev. Father T. Toomey and the Rev. Father J. McCarthy, who were recently ordained; and also five of this year’s students: —I. Mee, T. Plunkett R, Glen, A. Condon, and J. Hall, who entered the juniorate of the Christian Brothers in Sydney.
